Afternoon

Lets just say i've never driven or planning to. Car is for missus.
I am looking for something solid and not too expensive

Something 1.6ish and diesel
1-2£K for something used
Maybe up to £10K new

Dont need anything fancy, just a day to day family car

Can anyone suggest anything?

I looked at vauxhall astras they go for under a grand used

Why do you need a diesel? If you don't know the answer to this, you don't want a diesel. Especially for 1-2k.

Find a 1.6 petrol Focus and your job is well and truly jobbed. :)

I thought diesel workout to be cheaper? Maybe i am wrong. Did look at the focus, new is expensive, used isnt worth the money. am i wrong or am i wrong? :D

I think you are wrong. Diesel only works out cheaper if you do a lot of miles and don't have any major engine issues. A focus is worth every penny you spend on it, although almost any car under £2K will be worth what you pay for it.

Andi.

Seems like two odd extremes, £2k used or £10k new, ie neither is particularly good

If youre not doing a huge number of miles, a nice 1.6 Focus would do the job well

Rather than consider a poor £10k new car, why not go to £3k-£4k and get a nice second hand focus

Diesel will not work out cheaper unless you are doing mega miles - price per litre of diesel is obviously higher, purchase price of new or used diesel car will be higher, repair costs on newer diesel cars - potentially higher.

If you are doing the miles and need a diesel, then a 1.6 litre self imposed limit rules out almost all diesels barring Ford 1.6tdci/ citroen/peugeot 1.6hdi.

1-2k will only get you into a MK1 Focus, and 10k would not get you into a "New" MK3.... if you wanted a "Newish" Focus you are looking at between £4k and £6k, for a MK2 on around an 08 plate, depending on engine, spec and mileage.

Thanks for all the help
Looking at FORD FOCUS 1.6 CDTi ZETEC which seems pretty decent for around £3K

As i mentioned i am completely clueless about cars, will try and find one local to me

oh god just noitced its diesel

You do realise some of us prefer diesel just because it's diesel, right ?

And a Focus is a terrible car if they are going to be carrying people in the back.

Entirely valid opinion, but presumably that is because you like the power delivery of a diesel?

And a Focus is a terrible car if they are going to be carrying people in the back.

Any particular reason?
MK2 Focus is one of the biggest family hatches you can buy - not sure what you are comparing it to.

Correct on the power delivery

Re: Focus
Go sit in the back seats !

Our company Pool car is a Focus, I drove it back from Taunton to Peterborough with two of our drivers in the back and they whinged constantly about the lack of room & comfort in the back.

I'm a short-arse (so the seat is adjusted forward) and the passenger behind me said "I'm bloody glad your a short-arse Paul, My knees'd never cope if you'd been my height"

I don't believe it, but ok. ;)

Even if what you say is true, you'd have to be silly to buy a £1-2k diesel, considering it will be probably coming up to 12 or 13 years old and with 120k+ miles on the clock. It is very likely to suffer from the big three, if it hasn't done so already (turbo, DPF, DMF/clutch), which will cost a bloomin' fortune and almost not be worth doing.

The focus isn't terrible in the back but I can accept it wouldn't be the most comfortable of places for anyone who is taller than average.

The only car of focus size I've ever seen that I would say has particularly good leg room is the civic, but tbh do many people cart around 5 adults in a focus sized car? for kids up to and including teenagers it should be no issue.

Currently own one (in the process of getting rid at the minute)and can't see the problem unless you have 2 giants in the front and 2 in the back. I have the drivers seat 1/2 way back and still plenty of room in back.

12-13 year old will not have a DPF and older diesels particularly vag will run to 200k miles. But yes it would still be an old car - 2k could probably buy a much younger petrol

Didn't realise Mk1's didn't have a DPF - but yeah, clutch and turbos will still be a worry.

What is possibly good about your engine starting in the morning sounding like you just kicked a toolbox down the stairs?

Lol my R56 Cooper S Petrol sounded like that from new on cold mornings - apparently it was a characteristic of that engine... More like a badly designed timing chain tensioner I found out about, about 3 months before I sold it.
