New car recommendations - 9-12k

At the moment I'm thinking about changing my FN2 Civic Type R for something a bit different. I love the car, but its ride quality is starting to grate a little and would prefer something with a bit more power as well.

Starting to get a little bored of hot hatches, as I've had a few of them now.

Currently doing around 12k a year, so mpg isnt a massive concern, but don't want to go to Focus ST levels of MPG.
Heres the requirements -

-Budget between £9k and £12k, the lower the better.
-At least 200bhp
-As close to 30mpg as possible. Willing to consider diesel but it's not essential.
-Reasonable maintenance bills.

Any thoughts? I can't really think of anything beyond a 330i at the moment..

Does not compute. In real terms, i shouldnt imagine the fuel economy to be hugely different.

The fuel economy is vastly different. The Focus ST seems to spray the fuel out of the back of the car as a means of propelling it. The 3.0i engines in the BMWs have been famously frugal. Look at what fox achieves with his and that's coming up to 10 years old!

19 mpg is my usual average.

can i ask how? I've never had a tank that low except after an ocuk meet where ive been thrashing it all day.

I usually average 23mpg on my (horrible) commute, which is 16 miles each way with lots of hills, schools and varying speed limits (so that you're speeding up just to slow back down again).

With January being a little bit tight after xmas and a few bills on the car, i decided to try and save a bit on fuel...managed to average 27.2mpg on this commute over the week by being a bit more cautious. More than respectable for a 3l i6, and a world away from 19!

I work only 5 miles from home and the first mile from cold is over speed ramps, the remaining 4 miles are up hill through traffic :p

Once I leave town its over 30mpg, mind.

Ah my mistake, I thought you got high 20s - low 30s.

Cool go for it. I would expect that on a commute where the focus manages 20mpg, the 3.0i BMW would average 25-27mpg.

I am by no means suggesting he should get a Focus ST but i just thought it strange that he thought that it would be a lot worse on fuel. :p

The BMW might be a bit better on a long run i would have thought though.

Still looking for inspiration. Would like to keep the budget at around 10k really if possible, which seems to be a bit of a wilderness for decent cars!

I think the trouble is, you arent going to find anything that is significantly faster than your Type R that genuinely does 30mpg. ( well, not if you are going to want to use that power anyway)

It is tricky really. What is the most important thing you want out of changing your car?

Good question. I'm looking for something more comfortable with better ride quality, slightly bigger and a little more economical. I'm not opposed to a diesel if there is one that meets this criteria without being too dull!

I dont think that model has the newer 210 engine..I think they have just posted the specs of the current engine line up

thats probably the slightly older, slightly higher to tax an slightly older co2 output 200bhp engine

He said ride quality. S-Line Audi's dont have ride quality, they have concrete filled dampers. Somebody told VAG that firm was sporty and thats all there was too it.

That's a good point..
