Back with a Vengeance.
right then,
been trying to come up with a car suggestion for a work colleague and thought you lot would come up with suggestions that wouldn't occur to me.
budget is around 7-8k.
not too bothered about age but preferrably less than 70k miles on the clock.
he's 22 so insurance needs to be relatively affordable...ish.
he doesn't cover a lot of miles so economy isn't too great a concern either.
at the mo he's considering a Leon Cupra R/scooby, and actually said last week he'd even take a VTS saxo, but i know you lot can throw in a few wild cards.
i'm interested in what you lot will come up with anyway.
thanks for reading.

st170 is an obvious choice in that bracket imo.

dc2?

up the budget a little bit and you are heading into st220 price bracket :D

scooby. Hope he enjoys visiting the petrol station

and you said insurance needs to be good. a leon cupra r is group 18!

Something doesnt add up really

Focus?
you can get a 170 for that price?
are they any good?

i'm his friend, not his wife, and as such he decided not to tell me all of his particulars/inside leg measurement/dna sequence/national insurance number etc.

rather than play the smart ass, try connecting the dots for yourself.
if the guy regards a scoob or a cupra r as insurable, then suggest something in a similar vein.

you wont find a sub 70K GTI-6. Its a great great car but very unreliable and you probably wont find one with working air con. They are about 3k for a 90K example.

I had one for my last car and loved it but its MPG isnt great and french electrics are a nightmare.

.

they are good cars, people call them 'warm' hatches for some reason, 170bhp is hardly warm in a family hatch though. shed loads available under £6k :D

there are a few st220's under £7k as well, which is crazy money for what you get (providing you dont buy a dog of course).

I think for a Cupra R youre looking at at least 8k?

Octavia vRS?
after a quick phone call i've figured out why this post caused me some serious head scratching.
the budget is £7-8k, and not £5-6k.
my mistake and apologies to all who've already made suggestions fitting the lower price bracket.

Golf GTI (150BHP version)
Golf TDI (150BHP version)
crazy isn't it?
the fact that the above even exist.

performance diesels...who saw those coming?
how do those two stack up against each other? obviously they deliver their power in completely different ways, but i'd probably go for the diesel version.

(incidentally i was told the best way to get a GTTDI 150 is to buy the 130 and remap as the 150 model carries a much higher resale value as demand is huge for them.)

How about a minty mint stacklight merc? ;)

*n
i should've mentioned that Penski is barred from this thread, lol.
the guy isn't into classics at all and his gf even less so.
shame as it rules out some really tasty options IMHO.

Astra 888 Coupe? Something different and pretty stunning!

The TDI has massive amounts of torque and the turbo is great. I owned a TDI 130 prior and its drive is very nice. The gearbox is the reason i stuck with golfs as its so smooth. Plus it delivered 50-55mpg average and is in the cheap tax bracket so only £110 for a year. Plus its a diesal so goes forever and keeps it value.

Petrol is like any other. Great pulling at all speeds and much better high end responce but 30MPG

BMW 5 series? - Fox can cope with the insurance - £7 - £8k will buy a good one.

Also consider the BMW e46 323 / 328i ?

Otherwise, I nod in agreement with the Mondeo ST.
