So, with the sale of the e46 I have some coin burning a hole in my wallet.

I was just about to pull the trigger on another P38, as I do very much miss my old one. However, a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 Litre Limited has popped up locally with what appear to be very low miles.

Now I seem to remember some people on here mentioning their love for these Jeeps, although I believe they were talking about earlier ones?

The P38 is a known motor. I know the last 2 owners, and know that it has been well looked after in that time. It's a 2000 plate, so THOR engined, but alas it is only the 4.0 not the 4.6 :(

The Jeep did catch my eye because it was such low miles, and low owner car, with full service history though.

Any ideas on what these 4.0 Jeeps are like?

We have a Diesel 2002 Jeep, not the same engine obviously but I'd say it's got a lower build quality inside to my MK3 Mondeo. If it wasn't for towing & the fact that we do actually use it offroad which it seems pretty decent at then I'd mirror the statement above.

But then I really don't like 4x4's.

Why so? The newer variants have won quite a few accolades and awards, can the older ones really be that bad?

The cherokee isn't too bad the grand cherokee is wallowy, dangerous, poor performance, expensive to run and unreliable. The only saving grace is they are pennies to buy because no one wants them.

Isn't the 4.0 a Six not a V8?

I rented one once and it was a 6 cylinder 4 litre I am fairly sure...

I stand corrected. Looks like a straight 6. That's that one out the window then. If I'm going to suffer sub-20 mpg, I'll be driving a V8 for it.

Cheers.

Use what the Arabs use..Nissan Patrols and Toyota Amazons.

Pah... I'm not looking for reliability here. Don't want some Japanese 4x4 that actually just works. Much prefer something with a bit of character.

I have been considering an early 4.4 L322 also, but then I have to double my budget (and a little more), and it will still be a stop gap motor. So I'm leaning more towards a cheap P38 until I decide if I want to move the F11 on for a 4.4 TDV8, or keep it and save for a 3.6 TDV8...

That jap stuff has no character
snipped the rest...

As I said, I don't want some Japanese stuff that actually works.

Also, to be honest, I can't be bothered re-upping a load of photos to show how dire and agricultural the interior is of every single machine you linked. And no doubt there will be zero out there anywhere close to the budget of a P38 anyway.

Sure, they will no doubt be great off-road. And if that's all I wanted, then fine. But I do like a bit of comfort for the other 95% of the time the vehicle gets used. Not that I would consider the P38 an overly luxurious interior, but it certainly beats the interior of every other 4x4 in the same price bracket.

In fact, no, I'll just do it to make the point.

I'd have to up my budget to L322 money anyway to get a decent Hilux or Landcruiser anyway, which would be about the only Jap 4x4's I'd likely consider, but they look like this...

Hilux:

Landcruiser :

Compared to a Range Rover that looks like this :

But even the P38 has a nicer interior than the Jap stuff :

Very first post is about P38's and a 2002 Jeep. 2 grand motors. Then went on to doubling the budget for an early L322, as it would be necessary for the likes of the toyotas that were imaged. But that's 4-5k, still nowhere near 10-15k.

I have the 4.7 V8 model, 16mpg on average and I paid pennies to buy it. It's been fantastic though, reliable and well looked after, I only do a 6 mile round trip for work so the mpg doesn't bother me and the V8 rumble is always nice.

We also have a straight six 4.0 in the family which I've driven, it's also brilliant and not had any issues touch wood! Even though the one you're looking at isn't the V8, I wouldn't be put off by that personally. (The 4.0 still sounds fantastic)

I did buy it at the time though as I wanted a comfortable ride, something which can carry lots of stuff (refurbishing our first home), and for the amount it cost if the engine died tomorrow, I've had my monies worth...I'd probably just buy another for pennies.

Hang on a minute here's character

That's just tyres though - a Landcruiser wouldn't fare any better on the same tyres.

I do agree with the OP, and it's why Landrovers sell so well. They are the only manufacturer that do proper off-road with proper luxury and quality interiors

Funny thing personal taste!

I prefer the older Jap stuff (And older UK/european stuff too) precisely because of the simple and uncluttered interiors. not to mention the simple and uncluttered engines/transmissions (LC80 Me!, Oh and an old E36 compact 4 pot for economy! :D ) They do what they need to do without doing anything else much.

Last thing I would want in a vehicle is a cockpit that would look more appropriate on the space shuttle! :p

But then it takes all sorts i suppose.
