New car time

Whats your reasoning for choosing BMW over the Audi, and why not a convertible?

Have you owned either of these cars? I would be interested to know.

Cheers

Don't get a diesel 3 series convertible. My dad has one (330d) and as nice a car it is he just looks like such a tool with the rag-rag-vag-vag-dang-dang noise when stationary. Even he seriously regrets not getting the 330i (335i was out of budget and too uneconomical)

You really don't want a 2.0 TDI Cabrio. Nice summers day, cruising into town and it's like sitting on the back of a canal boat - you undo all the hard work manufacturers have done fitting soundproofing to hide the terrible diesel din.

If you MUST buy a 2.0 TDI then go for the Coupe, not the Cabriolet. That said if you are doing big miles why do you want either of these cars? Hard riding Coupes are not comfortable places to spend big miles.

Secondly 15k a year is not 'big miles'. It is only about 3k more than average!

Thanks for the advice, I do agree with the noise comments but petrol just is too expensive.

In regards to why I want a coupe, Im not ready to jump into an old mans saloon or estate just yet. I have always had coupe's or roadsters.

So if we narrow it down to a coupe. Which one out of the Audi or the BMW should I go for?

Roof down so you can hear your disaster of an engine choice that bit clearer.

Sline msport box ticked so you can attempt to convince your car isn't a total wet leaf

There must be better ways to spend the money

Unfortunately petrol isnt up for debate. It has to be a diesel so any constructive comments on the two models would be appreciated.

Cheers

See this worries me - petrol is not really too expensive at all, especially at 15k a year. If petrol is 'too expensive' for you then why the budget of £18,500 for a car?

Using the combined fuel consumption figures on a 2008 car over 15k a year:

330i M Sport £2553 PA
320d M Sport £1797 PA

If £60 a month is a deal breaker is an £18.5k car sensible? You are looking at cars which, in the case of the 3 series at least, for example have a set of tyres that costs circa £1000 to replace. Both cars are likely to depreciate by several thousand pounds a year, too. The warranty is about 500 quid a year. Against the backdrop of costs like this why is the £60 a month fuel difference a deal breaker? Is the car going to be on a big finance deal or something hence the massive focus on small monthly differentials?

its not a case of not being able to afford the 18.5k. 60PM is 60PM that I dont need to spend just so it sounds nice!

I really cant see any other benefits, as the quicker it is - the more tyres and other components will wear quicker generating more cost

Well it's not just so it sounds 'nice' at all - there are other benefits. The power delivery of a 272bhp 6 cylinder engine is better, it is smoother, it is more refined, it is nicer to drive, it is obviously faster and it's an engine thats better suited to the sort of car a 3 Series Coupe is.

Unless the purchase is mostly about 'the bling' why would you be un-interested in any of the above?

Err....

You are sadly mistaken if you think a 320d is going to have less components replaced because its less powerful!

As for which to buy - I test drove both and picked the 3 Series but it sounds like you'd be happier with the Audi.

We seem to be missing the point of the post, I didnt ask for opinions on engines as Ive already decided im buying a diesel.

I wanted peoples opinions on what is the better car to drive, running costs, owning etc.

It's sort of like buying a £4000 i7 Quad Core, 16GB RAM, 4 x SSD's, nVidia GTX 690 then insist on using a 15" CRT Beko screen because you don't want spend more than £50 on the monitor.

It just...doesn't make sense and ruins the whole thing?

Why don't you set your budget at something like £16k and use this to allow you to buy a car with an engine that compliments it, rather than ruins it. Best of both worlds no?

I have a 3 Series coupe and it is a fantastic car, however the 320d is just souless. And, i swear to you, if i had spent £18000 on a 320d, i would be crying into my cornflakes, when i could have spent a bit less and had an engine which is silky smooth, quiet AND economical at the same time.

You told us you wanted to buy one of 4 different cars and simply asked for our thoughts. We gave them to you and you shot them down because they didn't match your own.

To be honest, I only want opinions from people that have owned either one of these

I've owned a 335i M Sport Coupe. Does my opinion not count because I didn't buy the diesel one to save a small amount per year in fuel or something? I'd have thought the fact I sat down and did all the maths before purchase would make my opinion quite useful to you.

What do you actually want from a car? A decent sporty Coupe or Cabrio thats great to drive? Or something that looks posh and has the right badge? If you want the former, then buy a decent 3 Series Coupe without a 4 cylinder diesel engine. If its the latter, buy an Audi A5 2.0 TDI S-LINE but make sure it has Xenons so you get those Audi LED's. Job done.
