Collected my new car yesturday, 1995 Rover 220 GSI.

Paid £850 for the car, which had no tax at the time, so £940 including 6 months. Original owner had it 3 years, then its been owned by the gent i bought it from and his cousin briefly. Has just about every receipt off work done to it. Cambelt and had the head done when it started to weep oil from the top of the block at 80k, now just under 105k.
The car itself seems pretty imaculate, a tiny patch of rust on the back arch on the drivers side and its just started to bubble on the sill on the same side on the rear passenger window. It came with a kenwood headunit and 6 disc changer too which is nice!

Only fault is a dodgy temperature sensor which only seems to work at low speeds and whilst stationary, so im unsure if it just needs cleaning or replacing, im sure the rover fanboys can help me out.

I met up with rG-, Ripz and his old man and we had a 3 car trip up on the moors, stopped for a break and rG- took some photos. Damn that Celica of Ripz's dads shifts! Came over a crest and could see the road ahead, he was about a half mile away at least after only 5 minutes of driving! As i was last to the carpark i had an audience while i proceded to stall several times trying to reverse into a space, being used to driving oil burners the clutch seems really heavy and i was just getting used to having to actually use the throttle! :o Managed to rack up another 120 miles today with no problems now though :)

Unfortunatly, being 20, having my license less than a year, and thus no no claims bonus, insurance is like man love with sand for lube. How does £170 a month TPFT grab you! :( I figured i would have to pay a load at sometime, and would rather have a semi decent car for my trouble! Drinks the fuel as well, but i knew that before i bought it.

rG- has some pics i believe, so ill wait for him to post, should flatter my car more than if i took some would.

Yeah, i went down with DRZ on the bank holiday and checked it out, no mayo or anything in the oil or water, and all seemed good, ill wait and see what agw suggests or on rovertech, hopefully its an easy fix.

Does it go cold when you drive? Thermostat probably stuck open, won't help mpg either.

Wouldn't worry about the headgasket on these engines, they are very strong. The heads warp usually warp before the gasket blows when they get hot.

Looks a nice clean example
Yeah when i drive it drops straight away, and yup, poor mpg, but blamed that on the old right foot, ive put £60 in, done ~250 miles and ive got about 1/3 of the tank left overall!

Got the thermostat changed today, wasnt too hard, forgot the reservoir was at the top of the system and lost all the coolant from there though :o

I wasnt sure if it was in the pipe like on the air con models, so took that off first, which it wasnt, all the coolant emptied out of the top of the system...
bugger, so it was under the metal thermostat housing.

Two nuts and it came off, simple enough to replace, just need to get some antifreeze from hellfrauds to top it up with now, jobs a good'un!
