I am wanting to upgrade my gpu so i can mainly watch 3d blueray content on it with the nvidia 3d vision kit and my lg 120hz 3d monitor which is 1920x1080 resolution, i will also be wanting to play a few games like battlefield 3 and so on, any advice on a decent card tht will play 3d content smoothly at tht resolution?

Hi there,

May I ask what model number monitor you have?

To play modern games in 3D you really want a powerful card to keep up - as 3D usually reduces the apparent framerates by over half. Therefore you should go for a card on the level of the GTX 480, GTX 570 or greater. Personally, I would wait a month or so for Kepler to arrive.

My 560TI is fine for Skyrim and BF3 but I do lose a couple of frames compared to 2D.

Like Andi says, see what Kepler brings to the table.

Also, what is your current set-up please?

my monitor is LG W2363D 120hz

and my rig :
q9550 @3.8ghz
8gb of corsair dominator 1066 cl5
p5q deluxe
64gb crucial m4
ati 3870x2 - getting old haha
psu - corsair hx520wt

thanks for the replies aswell :)

like i said the main reason i want a 3d setup is to watch 3d movies and not play games in 3d i will most likely play games in 2d, well it would would be nice to have a tinker with 3d games :) , i suspect that means having an sli setup though or spending a boat load of money on a high end card :(

What sort of budget do you have?

480SLI for £340 is an absolute steal. not needed unless you want to constantly play 3D, a single 480 would be enough

it is a nice monitor i picked it up for an awesome price as well, wish it was a 27 though ;)
should really of mentioned tht i have about £320 to spend on a gpu and a vision kit, but i may just spend 320 on a graphics card and buy the 3d vision kit in a couple of weeks, hmm what to do....

i cant run nvidia sli on my current board and my case would not fit them in and also i would need a new power supply so thats not an option :(
even running 1 480 i would probably need a better psu

My £200 card plays 3D fine and that 480 @ £180 will play it even better. If you only intend on light gaming. Go for the 480 but it is a little on the noisy side so maybe not a great option for films.

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 480 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (015-P3-1480-KR) £179.99
Total : £190.79 (includes shipping : £9.00).

or maybe

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 560Ti "448 Edition" *** 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (012-P3-2066-KR) £201.95
Total : £212.75 (includes shipping : £9.00).

This card is a lot quieter but £20 more, so up to you.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend running a GTX 480 on a HX 520W PSU. Therefore, your best option for a card right now is a GTX 570. This one for example is a nice deal and should leave you enough in your budget for the 3D Vision kit.

However, if you can I would really wait for Kepler - as these cards are expected to be a good deal faster and more power efficient than the current 40nm Fermi cards.

However, if you really just want the 3D for films and don't plan to do much 3D gaming then you may want to consider something cheaper/cooler/quieter like a GTX 460 or GTX 560Ti.

a better PSU would be a nice investment for the future! :)

I asked the specs and missed the PSU. Sorry and Andi is completely correct. That PSU will not run (safely) a 480.

So ignore my recommendation for the 480.

i will most likely be upgrading my psu in the next couple of months also, tht evga 570 looks good :) does any1 no how long until the new kepler cards are out, mid range and high end 1s, there most likely to be very pricey when they come out though aren't they?
