New card advice

Hey all,

So I have a Asus GTX460 768mb card, which, just won't work in my system (works fine in a friends, and has been working smooth for a week). I'm pretty sure it's a compatability issue with my Gigabyte H55 mobo or something.

Anyway, I'm looking to sell that to my friend, and get something else, I've been completely put off Asus and Nvidia now really, this was my first Nvidia card.

I've been looking at the XFX HD 6850 for roughtly 150 quid. So that's my top end of the budget. Is there anything better I can get?

Maybe I'm kidding myself this will resolve all my issues and it's probably a Mobo/PSU/CPU problem. But I've been running a Asus Nvidia EN210 SILENT in it without shutting down, for about 3 weeks. If it is a hardware problem, then it would have to be the PSU rather than the mobo (maybe one of the 6 pin plugs is dead?).

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
ru1n3r.

Hi,

There has been a lot of Nvidia compatibility problems popping up with the GTX 460 and certain motherboards so you're probably correct regarding your issue.

The GTX 560 is due very soon as well as the HD6990 so this may change some pricing. When I say "may", I mean it as nothing might change, but it is maybe worth hanging on just to see what happens.

Otherwise, the 6850/70 is probably the next best thing you can get for the price. There is the MSI 5850 but before you consider it, I'd at least read through this first to see if you want to try it. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18221304

Thanks for your reply JD. I'm assuming you mean from saying before I consider it, and after reading over that post, that it requires a bit of OCing and ballache to get it to run fast? Just wondering if that 5850 at stock speed would be faster than the 460 768mb at stock speed?

Cheers.

No problem mate.

Yes, for some it's giving a headache but I've seen others with a decent overclock also, but to be honest I've seen more :( than :) although my memory could be selective.

I had one ordered (msi 5850) but after seeing all messing around regarding overclocking, I just went and ordered a 6950 instead due to the BIOS flash ability to make it into a 6970 and a chance to overclock as the 5850 MSI thread put me off.

Here's a stock 5850 vs the 768mb GTX 460.

Looks like you (and that bench website) has sold me on this cheap 5850! Comparing that with the 20 quid more 6850, they seem pretty much the same.

Thanks a lot for your advice, helped me tonnes!

Good luck with your new card as you deserve to be playing some games rather than what you've had to do so far. :)

The 6 series are better with tessellation but not a lot is using it at the moment. I also never bought my card for the tessellation improvement as I'm not eager to play AVP or Metro2033. It's no big deal to me and in everything else the 5850 is the same if not faster than the 6850.

I think you could've RMAd your mobo AND gfx card together and they would have given you one that worked with your mobo. 5850 is an amazing card - enjoy
