New card needed

Well my 4890's went poof on me, one died a month ago the other this morning
both dead VRM's

so i need a new card, i know by looking at specs the ATi's are faster but to my experience nvidia has always been better at doing multiple things at once?

Now i mainly play eve online in windowed mode with 6 instances open at once
Do you think id be better going with something like a 480?

Personally I wouldn't go with the 5xxx series now unless you can get a really good price on one. I've seen 5970s for £365, although the downside to that is no warranty. A 480 seems like the best move if its within your budget and just want a single gpu setup. The prices are still pretty good, but I'm seeing them creep back up week after week. You could look at 2 460s/470s if you want another dual card setup, however from experience, a single gpu generally makes life a lot easier.

dual cards would be an option, allows me to bang anotehr 2 monitors on for my windows hehe, jsut wasnt sure if my PSU would take a pair of newer cards (TX750)

A couple of 460s would be fine on that psu as I believe the power consumption is just a bit more than a 480 if remember right. I'm running a 480 on the same psu with an oc'd i7 so you should have no issues there. A couple of 470s would be seriously pushing it though so I wouldn't try that.

Just need to decide between sli 460s and have more outputs or a simple single gpu solution with roughly the same performance (probs a bit less).

As I said though if you can find a good price on the 5xxx series line, which betters nvidias gpus then it's definitely worth a look, but bear in mind the 6xxx series is out this year...

EDIT: just checked your mobo and I can't see it does sli?

I had 2 ati's in Xfire so guessed sli would work too, i fail

so now i have to decide whether to buy a 5870 (looking at the XFX 1ghz'able one) or wait for 6 series if i can put up with this old 8series that long

No, 5870 simply not worth it's price point if comparing to 5850. Best wait for the HD6000 series. A 6850 'might' be as fast as (if not faster than) a 5870, but priced closer to the £200 side if we are lucky

Also, from what I recall Crossfire don't work for games in window-mode. So go for whatever fast single GPU card (don't consider the 5970, as it's internal Crossfireing two GPUs).

If you need something to keep you temporarily floating to last you till HD6000 series, try getting a 2nd hand 8800GT/9800GT/9800GTX+/GTS250/HD4850 for around £40 may be? A spare card could always comes in handy But if you where to get a card NOW, I'd agree you should probably go GTX480...unless you play other games in non-windowed mode and want to consider Crossfire.
