My trusty old Connect 3D 9800 Pro seems to have died a death and I am need of a new card. I want something of similar quality and have been out of touch with the graphics card market for a while. Just wondering what card is similar in spec and won't break the bank? I do not have PCI Express - just good ol' AGP. Are 9800 Pros still available

I play the occasional games and something of 9800 Pro standard will be sufficient for my needs...

TIA :D

In the same hole as you. My 9800pro broke (fixable I guess if I had access to another knackered 9800 - on mine one of the 2.2uH inductors fell off!!). Anyway, I bought a 6800 GS but don't actually have it yet - tomorrow maybe. I think it's a step up from the 9800 in performance but not too much outlay.

Lower spec than the 9800pro. If you're that strapped for cash might be better looking for a used card. s/h 9800 goes for 40-50 quid.

The X700pro is the 9800pro renamed (for all intents & purposes) performs exactly the same. For Same price you could get the newer X1600pro..

Why are PCI-E cards so much cheaper than AGP? Time for a new Mobo  ;)

Thats becasue AGP is dead, everyones moving to PCI-E, the cards are harder to find now to etc...., and the likes of the 7800 GS being more expensive than the PCI-E 7800 GT (much faster card) is because they need to make money back still from the shrinking AGP market, plus they can charge what they like as they know ppl still on AGP will pay those prices regardless. :D

You have to remember if you go for the 7800 GS on AGP instead, then all you are buying is a door stop, there is no resale value whatsoever, as when you come to upgrade again to PCI-E which you'll have to as the 7800 GS is the last high end AGP card, then you are not going to be able to sell the GS as no one will want AGP cards.

Cheers for that - not really the right forum, but can anyone recommend a decent S478 Mobo that will fit in my Antec Aria (so therefore has to be small) :)
