New card, should I just wait a few weeks?

I'm after a card for a new 6600k build I have pending, everything is ready but I've held off buying a card.

It'll only be used once in a while for gaming and I'll only ever be running at 1080p so I'd pretty much settled on a GTX 970.

I know new architectures are due very soon, so should I hold out and pick a 970 up second hand, or new, presuming the prices will drop?

I would wait for now, AMD's RX480 should come along a bit cheaper than a 970 while being more powerful and with more features.

Imo a 970 is a poor choice going forward, compared to the competition.

Less vram, worse dx12 performance, and Nvidia historically abandons previous generations in terms of software update improvements.

A 390 would be a much better choice, though I'd say wait for the 480 which will be even better.

I would not get a 970, I would try to stretch to a new 1070, or a new or second hand 980ti, if you can not stretch to that price then a lesser card like the 390 is a better choice.

rx 480 launches in 4 days...

Pretty silly not to wait for that, even if its just to see how it effects 970 / 390 pricing.

EDIT- after re-reading, I think your planning on waiting anyway. I think you will get much more useful advice once the 480 has launched.

I'd discounted the ATI cards because I've been told Project Cars doesn't perform well with them at all?

On release yeah AMD cards performed horrible thanks to gimpworks (Kepler also performed horribly on release, 960 beating 780ti). Seems to be fine now if you look up benchmarks from 2016.

I agree with some of the other posters that a 970 is a bad buy right now. 3.5gb Vram, poor DX12 performance and will not receive further driver optimizations.

Will look into ATI options as well then, not wanting to spend a fortune as I still do most of my gaming on the XB1 (probably £200 tops at this point)

Keep your cash for a few days mate

The Pound will return to some sort of value & with the RX 480 coming out it will perform better than the other choices at the price point or force some of them lower

Little bit of patience will be rewarded

Someone being optimistic about the pound! Just reading up on the 480, looks like it's worth the wait. I can last a few weeks without, for once it seems like I'm benefiting from timing my build right :)
