Well it seems my ati 1900gt has had its day now as the graphics lock up during gaming, anyway ive got about £150 to spend and theres loads of cards out there but whats the best for the price?

Gtx 260 or 4870 1gb. Depends whether you like ati or nvidia as the two cards are about equal. Though as the 4870 prices seem to be going up get the gtx 260 to stay under £150.

yea the 260 or 4870 are both competing in that range but just out of interest what games, settings, and resolution are you gaming at? May well be that you can save a bit by getting a 4830/50 if you won't notice the extra graphics horsepower

i mainly play fs2004 with a bit of cod5 and test drive unlimited, i dont play a lot of top new games. at the moment ive got the setting quite low as the card is a bit broken but the res is normally 1280x800-1024. ive had this card 3 years and i think its been fried abit as ive seen the temps over 100c when ive been under gaming load mainly on cod4-5 though. im limited on space so theres not a lot of air flow around the pc. im limited to playing fm09 due to the card locking up :( so im needing one soon

Be careful what you buy here then fella.

If you have limited space you might want to measure how much distance you got from the back of your X1900 to your drive bays.

The 260's and the 4870's are considerably longer than your current card.

If space is a concern then I think the reference 4870 is 9.5 inches in length while the gtx 260 is 10.5 inches.

If i remember correctly the x1900 is on the same pcb as the x1800 so is 9 inches in length if that helps.

had alook in the case and the card is 9inches, ive got about 1inch to spare then i will have to move the hdd. been looking to save alittle money and ive seen this 2

which would be better? or would you get longer out of the 4870 before needing to upgrade? im just a bit worried over the temps, my pc sits in a corner against the desk side and its quite close to the wall at the back of the case but i cant put it anywhere else really so how easy is it to fit extra cooling?

The 4770 would be what l would get out of the two. It's 40nm so it should run cooler than than the 4850 while giving roughly the same performance.

Not much in the two tbh. If you are thinking that a 4870 would last longer then get the 4850. It handles anti aliasing better than the 4770 I think and if you overclock the 4850 I found it to perform roughly the same as a 4870.

At £150 it's simply a case of going for the cheaper of the 4870 1GB and GTX260-216.

Both good cards with almost identical performance.

At the moment, the GTX260-216 is the best at £139.
