The newer stuff will at least push prices down, so I would say you're still best waiting until then. :)

Normally newer cards will be high end and I'm sure Nvidia will release some mid range cards later with less SP etc.

ATI are meant to be releasing some new mid range cards in June if you look at their full line up.

I'd wait a few weeks if I was you to see what comes out and the performance bang for buck.

As already sai, it should at least drop the price of current cards.

Is june the new release date for the next gen cards? I'm in the same boat as the OP.

I doubt very much that GT or GTS cards are going to get much cheaper, the GT is amazing value as it is.

But I do agree that you should wait until the new cards are out to see what it what.

HD4850 and 4870 will be upper mainstream cards offering better performance than any current G92 GPUs.

G92b may be able to reach it IF the clocks are substancially higher, the idea is generally that g92b wont be able to match RV770.

it will get cheaper as the newer cards will come in pushing down the GX2 which will push down the 9800GTX and then push the GTS down which will also push the GT down.

No, ATi's next gen (RV870) is due end of the year supposedly, Nvidia's is unknown.

I think everyone thinks the 4000 series from ATi is going to be around £200-250, and Nvidia's GTX's will be around £350-£375 for the 260, and £400+ for the 280.

The new ATI card(s) is/are midrange anyway. I wouldnt atall be suprised if there going for £150 on release. Remember ATI is going for some super agressive pricing, Nvidia might mop the floor with them in the frame rates, but for people who have, geee, I dunno, familes and such lol? Then the 4 series could be your next best friend.

I doubt the 260 GTX is really a mid range, its more of what the 8800GTS was back in late 2006. And I havent heard anything on lesser versions, but I would assume a 200-240 GTX accompanying the new Nvidia gear at some point.

You could perhaps score and old high end card on the cheap.

Swaying more towards the 4870 than anything else atm, mostly because I trust ATI's pricing more, and looks like they have huge overclocking potential, as well as a 55nm process. Oh, and DX 10.1 is a bonus, as long as developers add (and keep) support for it in newer games.
