I recently upgraded my case from an old Cheiftech tower to a Fractal Arc Midi. With the Fractal case the PSU is mounted at the bottom, I started by fitting the PSU as per the Cheiftech with the PSU fan at the bottom. However after a few days the feet of the new case had sunk into the carpet restricting airflow to the base and I could hear the PSU fan whirring struggling to suck in air. So I then mounted the PSU upside down so the fan was at the top and could get as much air as it needed, this did mean that the main power leads (24 & 8 pin) from the PSU were further away from the motherboard and so were being pulled a little. In this configuration the PC started powering itself up to 4 hours after I had turned it off and left it, but only the fans would start spinning, it would not go into POST or try to boot. I then re-fitted the PSU the right way up but raised the case off the floor to allow some airflow and this seemed to resolve the issue for a couple of weeks, but it has just started happening again. My thoughts are that having the main power leads pulled taught was somehow causing the PSU to randomly power on which would then start the fans spinning, the PC is not POSTing / booting because the power up signal has not come from the motherboard through the on/off button. But I don’t know why it would suddenly start happening again when the leads are no longer taught.
The PSU is a Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold 600w and is about 18 months old. I have triple checked that all the motherboard jumpers are connected properly (power / reset etc), the motherboard is not screwed down onto the case too tightly, and all the leads have sufficient slack.
Any ideas?
