Hi all

just a quick question (and probably daft) regarding moving the motherboard to my new case.

Can I or would it be not advisable to move the motherboard, with the CPU heat-sink still attached?

I'm fine with either way, but it means i'll have to purchase some thermal paste if it I have to remove it and i'd rather do that as I buy the case and save waiting on another delivery!

Can folks also recommend what to use to clean the heat-sink and CPU before applying the new paste?

Cheers for any help in advance :)

You should be perfectly fine to move it with the heatsink attached. Just make sure you unplug the CPU fan and any other cables before you remove the board!

thanks for the reply however I've just doubled checked everything before ordering and it seems that my current CPU cooler is 1mm too tall for my new case...

so i'll have to remove the heatsink! any good advice on which thermal paste to buy and best stuff to clean the cpu?

Some isopropyl alcohol and a cleaning cloth work wonders for cleaning up thermal paste. Failing that I believe some people just use nail varnish remover.

As for thermal paste, I've had a tube of Arctic MX-4 that's lasted me years, so not sure about newer stuff. The new Thermal Grizzly stuff seems fairly popular though.
