New Case - what PSU?

I've just bought an Antec 300 case from MM - good bargain! :) Now I have to decide how to power my system. It's an Intel Core 2 Duo system with a couple of gigs of RAM, 2 x SATA HDDs, on-board graphics and will be powering quite a lot of external stuff, both over USB and firewire. I'm not planning on doing any gaming with it, just recording and mixing music projects.

The Antec 300 has a bottom-mounting for the PSU, and has a grille in the bottom/back for PSU fans, so I'd ideally like to be able to use them with a dual fan PSU. As I'm recording music, noise is a bit of an issue, but it's only bedroom stuff so not a HUGE dealbreaker.

I was thinking somewhere around 400W..... any suggestions?

EDIT: The 'Antec PSU Calculator' reckons I need a 293W supply.... also, what I said about the case having a bottom grille for psu may or may not have been actual ********... don't know where I got that from?! Coulda sworn it had one when I first saw it?! :D

Cool - thanks for the suggestion - can't help but think that might be a little over my requirements range... although I do like the list of features... the cheapest here on OcUK seems like it's around the price I was expecting to pay (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-022-HP&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=) - Is there any reason this wouldn't be enough for my system? Or is it just better to get a higher quality of power running through the machine?

For one, it has only 1 SATA HDD Power connector according to its specification, so you would need the converter connectors.

For the sake of £15 or so, I'd choose the OCZ that Kenny mentioned, it's practically the best you can buy for that price. Has more connections and is modular over the one you linked, being OCZ you also get the 3 year swap warranty.

Regarding the power output of your system, it'll be no where near 300W, more like 100W :o

Hahha cool, thanks for that, so what's the benefit, then, of getting a PSU that's nearly 4 times as powerful as I'm likely to need? I mean, apart from the obvious 'being able to upgrade if I want to'....

Also, forgive my ignorance, but what's the '3 year swap warranty'?

Hahha cool, thanks for that, so what's the benefit, then, of getting a PSU that's nearly 6 times as powerful as I'm likely to need? I mean, apart from the obvious 'being able to upgrade if I want to'...

Google man, Google!

OCZ Technology Group offers a 3 or 5 year PowerSwap™ Warranty on all PSUs

All OCZ Power Supply Families feature an exclusive warranty that allows you to "swap out" a defective power supply. This eliminates the hassle of return-for-repair loops that other companies put you through, saving you time and ensuring you will receive a 100% hand tested, fully functioning unit as a replacement. Your defective power supply can be returned for replacement at any time within the specified warranty period. All replacements are guaranteed to operate without issue and to full specification.

400W is probably around the lowest most manufacturers build to.. just look around on the OcUK site :P - why bother looking at anything lower?
Also, the NON Modular OCZ 600W costs almost the same as the Modular 400W one, both great prices, pick and choose hehe.

its only 1£ more expensive than the one kenny spec'd

and its got good reviews

i recently helped my friend build some lan centre PCs and he used these PSUs for reliability and performance:D

Depends if your going to stick a graphics car in there at some point a 400w might not a 600w psu almost definately will and it's than close on price you might aswell.

True. Okay guys, thanks very much for your input - I'll probably go for that 600W as, as you say, it's only £1 more than the 400...

Cheers guys!

no i got the 600w... only a quid more and it'll be here tomorrow before 5pm.... that's the first thing i've ever brought online.......over the phone....spoke to sales, got it ordered in 3 mins....:D:D

now that's red hot.... welcome to the 21st century :D:D.......i'll be gaming again friday ;)

Freezer 7 Pro, Noctua or one of the Scythe ones. Thermalright Tower and the Tuniq are also highly popular.

mine came today at lunchtime.........already fitted and works ok.....fan is a bit noisey.

but i still cant game for too long until i replace the thermal paste...plus it's way too hot today.

i've never replaced a PSU before... all the bloody cables, what a nightmare... but it worked first time.
