pretty much as the title says, back in sept i had a bit of trouble and ended up having big end bearings replaced on my 51 reg celica vvti, they said id not kept the oil topped up but id checked it only 3-4 weeks before. aparently when they checked it was on the bare minimum (but not low enough to show the oil warning)

anyway.. visited my sister in cardiff last week but leaving cardiff to visit folks in taunton the engine warning light came on so i get onto taunton toyota and they agree to hook it up to the computer for me even though its a saturday as i didnt want to risk the 3hr drive home if it was something serious. result being they say the catalytic converter needs replacing and that its probably had a lot of oil gone through it after the previous issue

so what kind of cost can i expect from this, should i stick with toyota or would i be better off using somewhere like quik fit? not looking forward to this either way the £400 for the previous work still needs paying off my CC so going for some kind of performance replacement isnt really an option right now, not to mention my insurance is still pretty high anyway at £700 for a 25yr old with 4yrs protected ncb

3 - 4 weeks since you last checked your oil level? whilst modern engines don't tend to burn much oil, people forget, all engines use the stuff to a greater or lesser degree.

Prudent drivers ,of whatever vehicles, should check all fluid levels daily, it could well save you a packet in the long run!

check your fluids daily? who does that!

i've had my Peugeot for 7 years from new, i think i've checked it maybe 5 times. It never uses any and always gets done at the services.

I also had to have my Catalyst replaced 2 weeks ago as the exaust snapped, cost me £188 for a new one fitted from a local exaust specialist, i was looking for one for the Rx7 i used to have aswell but that was nearer £350 mark so it could be anything!

Daily? Seriously?

I think once-a-week is more than adequate.

At work I regularly get people in who have never, ever checked there oil level, or water for that matter.

i dont think im that bad compared to most, checked it at least once a month and before any long journey and it was always between the marks on the dipstick, i've changed how often i check it to every 2 weeks since

According to this bunch http://www.cats4less.co.uk your looking at £170 for the cat and fitting kit, plus probably a hour or two's labour at you local garage.

Say around £250 all in?
