Lovely Wolver-ampton!
Just tried a new chip that I got off ebay. The chap has 80 odd of these chips so I thought I'd give it a go.

I took out an athlon 64 3000+ 512k cache (desktop cpu) and replaced it with an athlon 64 3400 with 1meg cache (mobile cpu).

The computer doesn't POST or allow me to get into the BIOS. There's power to HDD's and fans but the chip doesnt seem to want to work.

The mobo is using a manufacturers BIOS and should allow chips up to 3400+

Any ideas??

The mobile cpu's are usually lidless - does your heatsink make correct contact with the core?

also, is your bios/board known to work with mobile CPU's? certainly back-in-the-day not all mobile bartons worked in all boards. certainly my NF7-s worked fine, but an MSI KT6-delta (much better board in general imho) wouldnt let me change multi atall - (whatever you picked it defaulted to stock multi)

No its modded, with a "lid"

As i said, this guy has 80 or so of them. don't see why it wouldnt work - the only real diff is the fact it has 1meg cache - biostar's site says the board supports chips up to 3700+ and this is a 3400.

Did you update to the latest BIOS? also remember, though a mobile chip can sometimes fit into a desktop board, the voltage and cpu id detection might not be present in the BIOS or board might not physically be able to run it. Does the board support the mobile A64s? its hit or miss with mobile cpus sometimes.

A lot of the mobile 754 cpu's are very fussy about what boards they will run in. There's a sequence you can use on startup, Ctrl+Insert i think, that forces default settings to be used.

When you say modded, do you mean he's somehow stuck an IHS on to the cpu. Maybe it's got very poor contact. Sounds a bit dodgy to me.

1MB L2 means it's a clawhammer. Not so good for clocking.

Wasn't meant for clocking - just fancied the chip. Impulse buy. He's sold loads of them so I think it's more likely a problem with my current spec.

Anyway, have sacked it off and bought a whole new system - see the "oh no another spec me" thread to see what I've gone for.
