Ok built my new conroe rig today and barring a couple of niggles everything seems to be ok..........but of course i'm here to ask a few questions ;)

1 Windows didn't ask me for my sata drivers and the disk is only showing 120 odd gb of storage but it's a 250gb drive? Any ideas. Please don't tell me i have to re-install. Answered

2 Now i have a fresh copy of xp, do i need an 'optomisation' to dual core properly. I seem to remember reading about a download or is that for a specific game. Answered

3 I now want all my data from my old ide drive but only have 1 ide controller with my dvd drive on it. Can i slave my hdd and add it to the same ribbon temporarily? Or is it easy to Lan them together to transfer? ANSWERED

4 In cpuz it says i'm running at 1600mhz but i think this is speedstep or whatever it's called. I guess it does run at full pelt when needed yes?
moved to motherboard forum

Once i've sorted these and a few other bits out i'm ready to bench and oc :D

You need to have SP2 to see over that size hdd, you will have to install it, or re-partition the rest of the hard drive to make it work.

I recommend slipstreaming your windows install using nLite, and installing that way.

Other option is to format the extra space as another partition.

I would say easier to lan them together, never like running HDD and optical on same cable, drilled into me from ages back that its a bad idea.

Check the bios for speed of the processor, if its reporting the right one in there then its all ok. :)

right just checked the bios settings.
multi 9*

cpu host clock controll [disabled] for overclocking

cpu host frequency 66

Now this tells me it IS running at 1600. i can't change the frequency (fsb i guess) without enabling the cpu host clock. Is this right?

Also all the stuff you said about slipstreaming sounded more like chinese mate sorry.

Not used a conroe personally from the configuration side yet, so best left to someone else.

Windows has a limit of 132gb on all version prior to Service Pack 1. They changed some things to make windows support much bigger hard drives. If your version of windows does not have SP1 or SP2 on you can make a new disk using your old one with the service pack on. This is called slipstreaming.

The tool you need is called nLite, and then you select integrate service pack, make ISO and burn it to disk, and use that to install windows. Once that is done it should install with the full size.

Or you can make multiple partitions up to 132gb without a SP1/SP2 install, but no single partition can be over 132gb in size.

There you go, slipstreaming guide for you! As Yewen said, reinstall Windows from the CD with SP2 slipstreamed in and you'll be able to use the whole HDD. Up to you whether you decide to delete your current partition and make a single big 250GB one or just make a second partition from the remaining space.

1) Go to control panel > admin tools > computer management > disk management then right click your drive partition select primary partition and then ntfs then let it format the thing. it'll be seen on your pc. * EDIT ONLY IF YOU PARTITIONED IT TO INSTALL WINDOWS + not the partition windows is on :<*

2) conroe needs no optimisation it works perfectly i think i already installed the microsoft dual core optimisation on mine before testing though. if it is buggy for you you could try that although i'm 100% sure it works without it.

3) just take the IDE off of the DVD drive, plug it into the IDE device let the computer install the necessary drivers for IDE and then the HDD should be visible, if not reboot. Set it to slave or master shouldnt matter so long as it's not first on the boot priority. Also note, if the files are located in like my documents it may be hard to get at them as windows may not let you get access :( happened with mine.

4) you probably have the thing enabled in bios which reduces multiplier if the pc is not in use. on my DFI infinity the option is called c1e. i have no clue about other motherboards. Yes it should run full pelt when needed.

Ok let me start with the great news that i actually understood what bfz was on about and have successfully partitioned and formatted the other bit on my hdd wooohooo

I'll have a look for the duel core optimisation on ms website. Guess it can't hurt to load it.

I'll also ask in the motherboard section about my chip and bios settings. Guess it makes sense.

Big thanks for the answers guys.
