Hi All,

I am planning on Upgrading my System (Thinking DDR3)

I would like to know how much of a difference there is between DDR2 and DDR3 because the price difference is highly noticable. (DDR2 being much cheaper)

My current Specs are:

-MSI Neo2 RD480 Mobo
-4x1GB DDR RAM Modules, (Windows only detects 3GB although Im using x64)
-2.2Ghz AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (Overclocked to 2.6GHz)

These are the main features I want to upgrade, I believe the rest of my components (Below) are "OK" for now and shouldnt affect the new system performance. HDD will upgrade in future to 10000RPM one.

-80GB 7200 RPM HDD - I don`t use all that space so no need for upgrade.
-DVD ROM
-650W Triple Fan PSU
-1GB ATI 4670 PCS GFX Card (PCI Express 2)
-System Air Cooled, Thermal Take Heatsink and Fan

The system I want to build will be used for primarily gaming purposes. I can currently run COD4, BF2, Half Life 2, etc on MAX. But struggle with FSX on MED-HIGH, haven`t bought newer games as of yet such as Farcry 2, Fallout 3 as FSX doesnt run smoothly MAXED out so im sure the newer games wont either.

This (Below) is the DDR3 Intel system I am looking at. My budget is £300 - £400

-Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard off OCUK for £85 (Description Wrong! Showing DDR2 WTH?)
- Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz Guaranteed to run at 3.00GHZ (1333FSB) - Retail (£164)
-G.Skill 2GB DDR3 HK PC2-10666C8 1333MHz (2x1GB) CAS8 Dual Channel Kit (F3-10600CL8D-2GBHK) (£59)

Total £308 Thats the Intel System (Im not keen on Intel by the way, this was a quick search and not knowing much about intel systems.)

Now for the AMD system:

-AMD Phenom X4 Quad Core 9950 2.60GHz Black Edition (Socket AM2) - Retail (£136)
-Abit AX-78 AMD 770 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (£54)
-G.Skill 2GB DDR2 PK PC2-8500C5 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK) (£33)

Total £222

Note: I see on the Mobo`s it`s confusing as to whether or not im purchasing a DDR2/DDR3 PCI Express 1.0/2.0 Mobo???? I have constantly had this problem with OCUK their descriptions are inaccurate and misleading, I have to always email them to confirm everything before purchase to ensure I don`t get ripped of which is highly annoying.

AMD I see don`t do DDR3 mobo`s at the moment so I would like to know your thoughts on the issue, should I wait for AMD DDR3 boards? Should I get the DDR2 System? Or maybe you could suggest a system in my budget that will top my potential systems? Can you please also let me know wheteher or not the system components are compatible and all of the same speeds etc to ensure no performance loss.

I could splash out a bit more on an AMD system as I prefer AMD personally as I have always had AMD and experienced no troubles.

Im thinking of adding watercooling to the list.

Thanks in Advance for your Advice and Suggestions.

Thanks for your reply beefybarn. Its what I am thinking but I want to have a system thats going to last me about 3-5 years as my current one has (with upgrades to RAM and GFX Only) and at this moment im not sure if DDR2 will last that long.
