New Components (Need help)

Hey

Recently my CPU has been very slow and very hot (I made a topic yesterday in the CPU forum but no suggestions helped make it any cooler without buying a new cooler - lol)

So, I've decided that I will just buy a new CPU, motherboard & ram.

I have £300 budget and have found these components:

CPU
Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (RJC found this for me)

So, is this the best I can get for my cash? and does it all work together?

BTW, I already have a 160gb hdd & an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB graphics card

haha, well my brother has 1.5TB so I just put movies etc onto his hard drive via our homegroup

Probably won't get that package because:
1) it costs more for virtually the same setup -- and what seems to be a mobo which isn't as good
2) it only has 1 year warrenty and manufacturers warrenty will be void since it's overclocked

Are my assumptions about warrenty & mobo correct? or am I totally wrong lol

Sorry I missed your previous thread -I just had a look. Have you tried re-seating the stock intel cooler and ensured it is 100% secure (try jiggling it)? Often with these pushpin coolers one of the pins comes loose and drastically reduces the cooling performance leading to a very hot chip. Also, using some new thermal paste like this good stuff should help out a bit. As was suggested in that post a new cooler would be a very good idea - something like this costs less than £20, will fit any current system (i3/i5/i7/AM3) and cools so much better than the stock intel one (and is much quieter too).

For a brand new system - the components you list above are pretty much the best you can get for the money. If you go with a Phenom II X4 955BE/790X system you will save about £30 (which could be put towards a new cooler or a new graphics card) and plays games just as well - however in CPU-limited applications the i5 is the faster chip.

However, instead of spending all this money you may want to consider just upgrading your CPU. Your board supports the Core 2 Quad Q6600 (with the F10 BIOS), this is a fantastic chip and will only cost you ~£80 second hand. Add in a the CPU cooler mentioned above and you have an excellent upgrade to your system and only spend £100. The money saved could be spent on a much better graphics card, an SSD or stay in the bank.

Checked the fan and it seemed pretty solid

I think I'm going to go with the whole new system using the i5 and will probably buy that cooler too (I already have some of that thermal paste).

When I get some more money, I'll probably buy a Q6600, aswell as a hdd and sell it to someone as a complete pc.

Is it true that AMD cpu's and ATi gfx cards work better together than Intel cpu's and ATi gfx cards? or is that just a myth(or just something I came up with myself )?

I think I'll stick with the i5 as I often have high cpu usage when I'm multi-tasking(playing games whilst coding programs etc on my other monitor)

I've decided to stick to my original plans and get the i5, just because I've always used Intel and never had a problem + because some people have said the i5 works better under heavy CPU usage.
