Hello, I'm planning to get new components Mobo, CPU and RAM but I'm not quite sure which is the good/best ones out there right now.

I've seen some Haswell reviews and seems okay and the new piledriver from AMD. I'm not planning to break my bank to have an expensive rig.

I currently have core i5 760, p7p55D-E PRO, 4GB G.Skill Ram, 5870 GPU and 700OCZ PSU. Well I think my mobo is broken as its not posting anything nor beep errors although fans are working, GPU is working but running so fast and loud.

What I'm planning to get:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4430 or Core i5-4570

MOBO: Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z87
or
Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Intel Z87 or MSI G-43

RAM: Currently using G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3-1600mhz PC312800 CL7-8-7-24 1.6v

GPU: Keeping my 5870 as I like it and i don't see any point of upgrading it.

Network Card: Killer Xeno Pro

Power Supply: OCZ 700watts, keeping it as well I'm sure its compatible with Haswell or has enough power.

I don't plan to OC this rig as its pointless for my use anyway. I'm not a hardcore gamer, I only play when i get bored or need a break from doing University projects.

Purpose of this build:
- Play some games but not heavily
- To upgrade/replace my current one
- Photo editing
- University Projects, coding websites and such

If there are better yet not overpriced suggestions are welcome thanks.

Hi,

I have an idea for you...

Are you currently at uni or going next year?

How about you look at using a smaller case? This will make the rig easier to store and transport.

With that in mind an mATX board..

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4430 3.00GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £139.99
1 x Gigabyte B85M-D3H Intel B85 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £67.99
Total : £217.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I intentionally picked one with 4 RAM slots in-case you need more RAM for coding.

Considering i've just saved you £60ish, you could put that towards a mATX case..

Some idea's here:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Silverstone TemJin TJ08B-E Midi Tower Case - Black (SST-TJ08B-E USB 3.0) £83.99
1 x Aero Cool Dead Silence Gaming Black Mini Tower Windowed £72.95
1 x Xigmatek Aquila Micro-ATX Case - Black £69.95
1 x BitFenix Prodigy M MATX Cube Case - Midnight Black £64.99
Total : £321.22 (includes shipping : £24.45).

I'm already in Uni :),

I just thought I'd mention what I tasks I used to do on my old rig. I already have a haf 932 case so wouldn't need another one. Plan to get an ATX form so it gives me room to upgrade or add another GPU.

Btw why did you suggest B85 than Z78 board?

You don't need a Z87 board if you are not overclocking.

I think Doomedspeed chose the B85 over the Z87 because the 4430 is a non K. Which means no overclocking.

Would an AMD 8320 be better suited for your needs ?

Fair enough. It was just an idea. :).

I did pick the b85 board due to not over clocking the CPU.

Why would you need to go Xfire? You said yourself you aren't a heavy gamer. Even if you did start to lean that way you'd be much better off buying a new gpu rather than a second 5870..

Even my gf's dad told me to try AMD as its cheaper compare to intel but idk I just though Intel works fine for me not saying AMD wouldn't.

Yeah i know new GPU would be nice but is xFire only for video gaming?, just thinking of some future upgrades that will or possible need few PCI-E slots. But anyway so the only reason why not to get Z78 is due not OCing :/ but Z78 will give me the option to OC my CPU in the future if I plan to?

Btw I have H50 corsair cooler, just wondering if it will fit on haswell boards.

Well the 8320 is another option but its a bit of a hit/miss for the kind of tasks you're doing.

Take gaming, in some games it matches the i5/i7, in others ity beats them, and then in some others it is beaten by the i3..

Intel chips are solid, very consistant in everything they do. I think it'd be wise to keep the intel chip IMO.

Well your CPU can't be overclock (much if atall), you'd need a K series chip for that.. So that's why i went away from the Z87.. You see what i mean now? :)

I'd just overclock your current i5, can get anywhere from 4GHZ to 4.4GHZ on them (Although more likely to be 4.2GHZ maximum)
Unless you went for a 4670K and Z87 board.

Yeah I see what you meant now :). Btw how is Core i5 4430 compare to 4570? Yeah that's why I'm sticking with Intel chips because I know it will handle what I intend to do.

So do you think H50 will fit 1150 motherboards?

The H50 will fit, but the gain isn't worth it, you could get a second hand i7 860 and overclock it for cheaper.

Sorry, not planning to OC as K series CPU is a bit expensive for me. So i think H50 will be fine, just needed to know if it will fit to save a bit of money for SSD or RAM.

But i still wanna know about 4430 and 4570 :)

You don't need a K series 1156 as you can alter the bus without harm, as opposed to 1155/1150.

You can get i7 8XX's under 100 pound, overclocked that'd be far better than blowing money on a locked 1150 set up.

There are K series i7 8XX's, with unlocked multipliers, but they're not really needed.

EDIT : I see you think your board's broken, that changes things.
But still, there's tons of cheap 1156 set ups going.

The locked i5 1150 chips are still very powerful, but I'm not sure I'd ever pick one when we're talking over 200 quid.

EDIT 2 : Having a proper look through this thread. If you don't need the power, you could just get a cheap 1156 board, overclock your i5, and there's your upgrade, if you're running it at its low stock, then a 4GHZ overclock is a massive improvement over it, and for a measly 40 quid.

Couldn't find any 1156 boards around, I asked OC and checked other reseller and they don't have it anymore. That's why I'm upgrading to 1150.

Yes, I think my P7P55D-E Pro is broken which is hard to find nowadays -.-

You'd find tons second hand, you won't find them brand new, as it's EOL and has been for a long time.

But spending 200 quid to upgrade, compared to the small difference you'd see over another board seems strange when you don't need the performance.

An i5 4570 or whatnot is very powerful still, and will blow away a stock Lynnfield.

Haha by any chance do you have 1156 boards to sell? I tried amazon no luck and ebay is kinda gamble as most of the sellers are not accepting return.

Wonder if any people on this forum has spare or old 1156 boards.

You can't buy from the forums till you've reached such a time that you have Members Market access.

I have never actually used 1156 equipment :p

Ebay is the only place really.

So my current rig's motherboard is broken, now I wanna finalise my new mobo and cpu ready to order probably by tomorrow.

Is 4430 enough for the tasks I have listed? or is it worth going for 4570 would probably want an ATX board because I will probably need few more PCI-E slots for future upgrades.

Btw softwares I used are
- Photoshop
- Lightroom
- Text editors (Dreamweaver, Sublime text) but I don't they need that much power.
- Games (Dota 2, CounterStrike and other MMORPG)
- Microsoft office
