if the 640isnt overkill then the gtx cant be really it has 128mb more... and if it is overkill how long will it be before the gtx wont run new games on full 19" moniter or not? a few fps might not sound a lot but 30fps > 40fps is a huge diffrence.
if he is spending £1200 on a pc he may aswell have the best components for the money... then if he overclocks he is starting with a better spec...
i just cant understand how downgrading the cpu gpu and ram removing the os he needs can help in someones build even if the case is better?
The only thing I'd say about a 19" monitor and an 8800GTX being overkill is that the 19" monitor either has the same resolution as a 17" monitor (e.g. 1280x1024) or if widescreen (1440x900 which is even less pixels on screen) so it isn't hugely demanding but 1650x1080 (from a 20"+ widescreen) is much more so but then again I'm still happily pottering away with a 6800GT so I'm maybe not the best person to say.
ok it appears clocking a 6600 to almost 3ghz is the thing to do.. what kind of extra cooling would I need and how easy is it to achieve/chance of my processer blowing up on me?
You should just need a good CPU cooler, the stock one may do it but I'd suggest one from the following - Noctua NH-U12F, Scythe Ninja or Tuniq Tower - you can take your pick as they are all about on a par both price and performance-wise.
Pretty easy to do, you just need to bump up the FSB speed a bit to 333mhz (3000/9 = 333.33r being the desired speed divided by the multiplier). There is always a chance of damaging your CPU but it is pretty rare and most of these CPUs do that sort of speed comfortably, just remember to test as you go and there are plenty of guides in the forums about it if you do a quick search.
As has been mentioned you are going to need an after-market cooler. I would suggest and personally recommend the Noctua NH-U12F. Good suggestions from the guys, follow their advice
