Hello all, 1st post from a new member so please go easy on me.
I am trying to put together components for a new build to replace my existing 3 year old 3700+ amd / 7800gt sli system. These are the components I am looking at buying:

- AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 940 Black Edition 3.0GHz £195.49
- XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB £183.99
- Asus VH226H 22" Widescreen True HD LCD Monitor £156.39
- Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-Bit £91.99
- Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 AMD 790X £88.54
- Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU £83.94
- Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache £82.79
- Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX £39.09

Total: 922.21

This will all sit in my Tsunami Dream case with esisting dvd-rom & cd/dvd writer, & a wd 200js hard drive.

A couple of questions:

Does this seem a well balanced set up? I have up to £1050 to spend so any recommendations/improvements would be most welcolme within budget.
Will the stock cooler be good enough for small overclocking or should I buy a seperate cpu cooler?
Would I need any special thermal paste if I changed the cooler and if so, what type.
Do I need the psu, my current one is an enermax eg565ax-ve(g) - about 3 years old but very reliable during that time.

The system is to be used mainly for playing the latest games my current setup will not run & enclodeing/decoding etc.

Speed is my main objective over noise as my current system is quite loud anyway.

Many thanks in advance.

Well the i7 would be my choice mainly because intel are just more reliable etc and many apps are designed with intel not amd in mind.

The phenom II is meant to be better at encoding etc but i7 is a better all rounder i think. Both overclock well.

Also consider a intel Q9550.

I would steer clear of amd personally
