Looking at buying a new computer

I was told i should buy the titan exodus from OCUK and i have a grand to spend on it. I'm not the best when it comes to computer specs etc so i thought i should ask on here. This is what I'm looking for in a computer

- Something that will play the latest games in the best detail (and for a few years)
- Be a really decent computer for the next 4 years
- be able to play football manager in the best detail with many leagues loaded.

Hi there and welcome to the forums :)

Have you considered building yourself?

Buying a complete system from OCUK is a great idea and they make great computers, but there is just no substitute for picking all the best components for your uses and assembling it yourself - it really is good fun and you will get more bang for your buck.

This guide is great as it walks you through how to assemble a PC.

I would be happy to specify you some parts that would fit your uses. First, may I ask what the resolution of your monitor is and will you be needing any peripherals within the budget?

My first post seems to have went missing? this was my original post.

I've bought the Samsung P2450H 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black from overclockers, hasn't arrived yet, also have a keyboard and mouse and speakers so wouldn't need them.

Nice screen you have there.

Here is a spec I came up with - if I was building a £1k gaming PC today this is what I would buy:

However, please bear in mind that in December AMD are releasing a new graphics card like (called the 6900 series) which will replace the 5800 series - including the 5850 shown above.

Also, on the 5th January 2011 Intel are releasing their new "sandy bridge" CPUs and motherboards - these will replace their current mainstream platform - including the P55 and i5 shown above.

If you need and/or want a PC right now then the build above is solid and will do you well. However, if you are in a position where you can wait then you will get more performance for the same money.

thanks mate :) I might actually wait then, (not sure yet) will the sandy bridge be available straight away on the 5th of jan? and won't cost much more then the best they have now? Was looking forward to getting something in early December but if it's better waiting....

That is when it is supposed to be released by Intel in Las Vegas - with these kind of launches widespread availability usually happens at the same time. So I would expect OCUK to have these chips in early January.

They are supposed to be mainstream chips - so the prices should be around the same price as current mainstream chips like the i5 760.

Also how much would the above be if just bought as a complete computer? any ideas?

Well if you look at the titan exodus, add in the options for: 120GB SSD, GTX 470 (roughly on-par with the 5850) and windows 7 Home Premium - the total price comes to £1048.45 before delivery (£1066 delivered). Please note, this is with a less featured motherboard which only does Crossfire (no nvidia SLI) and the 2nd main slot runs at x4 speed - so you wouldn't want to run multiple graphics cards anyway (also I'm not sure the CX600 PSU would be up to it).

added vat?

Really just want to wait and get the better deal but waiting 2 months is really going to get to me, especially over the Christmas period. (i know i'm a fanny)

Will there really be that much in it? could i not just get what he has suggested for now and then upgrade to better in a couple of years with whatever new is out then?

If you don't want to wait then I say go for it - the spec above will be very fast in all modern games and can be improved in the future by adding a second 5850 in crossfire - the PSU and motherboard can both handle this and will give you a big boost in gaming performance.

The motherboard chosen there used to cost over £160 at launch - so I wouldn't expect getting a board with that level of features in the early days of sandy bridge for that kind of price.

Also, the i5 760 and P55 board are known to be good for overclockers and gamers. So if you did decide you want a CPU and motherboard upgrade in the future, then selling the i5+P55 will be no bother and you will most likely get a decent price for it - helping to offset the cost of the upgrade.

I decided to wait but i'm still wondering weather it's pointless, the only game i'll really play is football manager. still worth waiting for the sandy bridge?
