I've just moved to a new house and am plugged in to their router. All pings on all games etc have jumped.

Could it be the router? Here are the first 2 lines of the tracert:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
2 29 ms 28 ms 28 ms

Anyone know what I can do?

ping bbc.co.uk and post it here.

The router probably has nothing to do with it if oyu were using it in the old house. Is this a ADSL phone line or cable? If it's a phone line perhaps this place is further away from the exchange then your old place.

Well I'm using their router not mine. It's a place I've lived at before and I never had problems with pings here on my old netgear router, although it was a different isp.

You are using adsl, opal is owned by talk talk, thats probably the best pings you will get unless you can get cable. Click here and check how far you are from your exchange as this affects your ping and speed.

you probably have interleaving on - lot of ISPs enable it by default - you will need to get the ISP to re-enable fastpath mode - typical cause of ~30ms pings to first hop off CPE.

Yeah but I was at this address for 2 years on Be and had much better pings. Just as good as I had on cable over the last 10 months

ah thanks Rroff

Err yeah, have fun argueing with them on the phone for atleast an hour but yeah fastpath is the best way for online gaming.

You should get some better pings, also check how far away you are from the exchange. You should be pinging bbc.co.uk for around 20ms or less.

By the way, what's the make of the router? Netgear routers are some of the best you can get.

If its a business connection with Opal directly then just give them a ring, apparently they use UK call centres so should be straightforward.

If your ISP is Talktalk then you'll need to speak to 2nd Line Technical Support, just need to be patient with the 1st Line monkies, just insist on being passed to 2nd Line unless they can change you onto a fastpath profile :)
