New connection fitted - modem router can't act as a normal router?

Hi!

I've just had 50MB Fibre Optic broadband set-up and I have an Ethernet port in the wall. I'm used to having an ADSL connection there instead and I have a Netgear DGND3300 Modem Router.

This basically has 4 Ethernet ports and an ADSL port. Am I right in thinking I need a new wireless router as this won't be able to pick up and broadcast an Ethernet signal at all? I've tried it and it lets the signal pass through it but I can't access the router at all.

I've always used ADSL routers as I've never been able to get over 8MB normal line speeds (via the phone line) so I'm a tad confused.

Am I right in thinking a generic router has an Ethernet port in place of the ADSL port I'm used to, so I need to get one of those? Any recommendations if so?

Thanks in advance. :)

When you say 50mb Fibre optic to you mean Virgin cable or Bt Infinity?

With either i thin you require a cable router / Modem rather than a ADSL one.
