Hey,

Just put together a new conroe PC..

E6600
Asus P5W DH Deluxe
MSI GeForce 7900 GTO (x2) SLI'd
2GB Geil PC2-5300
SB X-Fi OEM

When I first put the machine together, it was all working fine - installed Windows XP and all was good....

Couple of weeks later, and problems start:

1) System kept rebooting just before it got to the welcome screen - I thought it was a virus or something, so I tried reinstalling windows. Got loads of "Cannot copy file from CD" errors. So I tried removing a stick of memory and the 2nd 7900 and the X-Fi and Windows installs without a problem.

2) Shut down and replaced the X-Fi, 7900 and memory stick, and PC keeps rebooting again. Removed X-Fi, rebooting stops but lots of explorer.exe errors for no reason.

3) Removed memory module - all seems to be working fine...just installing SP2 and will try adding the X-Fi later.

Does it sound like bad memory to anyone? Or could it be the mobo not liking two slots or something?

"Cannot copy file from CD" or "Cannot find file..." during XP installation are definite signs of bad memory.

You could try booting with just the "bad" stick, or run memtest86 to confirm it.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Tried booting with the suspected bad stick and the computer just reboots when it gets to the welcome screen. With one stick (the good one, obviously), it all works ok.

Im thinking its a bad stick. What do I do now? Can you RMA just one stick out of the kit???

Yeah, they will need to send you out another matched pair in order to run dual channel anyway. You'll have to send both sticks in.

Nice rig you've built though, shame you dropped unlucky with the memory.

I wish it was mine lol :D

Just built for a friend who may suddenly find his computer has gone missing... :p

I'll tell him to sort the RMA out then and get the matched sticks - thanks for the info people :)
