Hi,

After a 4 month RMA fiasco with another etailor I was today offered £270 credit to spend at their store. I'm not planning on going Conroe until January but the thing is, is I want to use my credit up now so I can (once and for all) have done with the etailor in question.

Again I'd like to stress that it is not OCuk that I'm talking about.

So, out of a E6600, 2GB DDR2 and a Motherboard, what would be the most likely to hold its value up until January considering I won't be using the part/s until then.

Also, if you think I should go for the Motherboard or Ram first I'd appriciate any recommendations of what to buy, and please bare in mind that I will be overclocking.

Thanks.

Most likely to hold its value would be the RAM, IMO. It's gone up a lot over the last couple of months but who can say whether it will keep going up?

I would wait personally. The processors will likely become cheaper or remain about the same price. I would put off buying the mobo as the P965 boards are still developing and there's quite a few others due for release fairly soon.

If I had to spend the money now, I'd just get the RAM and a decent CPU cooler. That's just me though.......

As above really, memory.

If you're really concerned though a case or psu would do even better. Could get a nice case, nice psu, and a couple of drives (and more?) for that money. You might have those bits already, you didn't say.

Yup ram..

The memory you see in my sig was bought for £130inc VAT(This week only) in august and now look at its price...insane

I don't understand why you're all suggesting to buy RAM now when its prices are all really high. Surely wait until the prices drop again, and then buy your RAM.
If its store credit you got, theres no hurry to spend it. Why not just let it sit until you're ready to buy everything, but be on the look out for bargins between now and then.

Well personally id get the RAM just in case it rises furthur in price. If its due to drop in price then maybe get your CPU.

New year / spring time is the *expected* time for ram prices to start falling closer to what they where at the end of this last summer

Erm, in terms of whats likley to "hold" its value - then despite the drop in price ram probably will more so than anything else if you where to buy right at this minute

i know its not what you asked but maybe treat yourself to a nice new monitor / case or something ? *shrugs* just something to considering hehe

whatever you choose you wont be too far wrong so just got with your gut imo :) only live once anyway

Whatever you do, don't buy RAM, the prices are really high at the moment and it's likely that they will drop in time for your upgrade. Why not buy an E6300, and a Gigabyte DS3? Great combo if you want 3ghz+ on a budget.

If I were you though, I'd just hold onto the credit until it's actually time to do the upgrade, I understand wanting rid of the etailor but CPU prices can only fall, same with motherboards, and probably RAM considering current pricing.

Well january is only 2-3 months away, I think the chances of seeing significant price drops on the E6600 by then are very slim, I wouldn't expext to see any real reduction on core 2 duo until the mainstream (ie not EE) version quadcores are out.
In short, get the CPU if you must buy now.

Thanks for the input guys.

I kinda wanted shot of the etailor asap but I guess the best bet is to hold onto the credit for a while longer, especially since their 2GB DDR2 kits are on average £15 more than OCuk's, and I'm not planning on overhauling my system until January. Hopefully the price's may have fallen a bit by then.

Thanks again.
