New core2 system behavior

Hi all

This weekend i've been assembling the new core2 based system and its all fine apart from one thing which is puzzling me....

The system performs as well as i expected in gaming (good 3dmark scores etc) but in windows it seems to not multi-task quite as well as my old system (p4 ht 3.4ghz)

For example, when i was burning a cd earlier, the mouse pointer movement was quite uneven (stuttering around rather than smooth)....

Are there any tweaks/settings/patches i need to look for to make windows a little more dual-core friendly?

I saw a post last week with a similar issue. I think the cpu throttling is on be default on some of these, so in windows the cpu throttles back and only runs full tilt in games and 3d intensive apps such as bench marks. Needs to be disabled in bios.

Not to sound to dumb! but what kinda of option would you be looking for in the bios?
Im having simlar problems, the machines works full whack in benchmarks and games but when it comes to day to day clicking around and installing stuff the system just seems sluggish.

Enhanced Halt State (C1E) clocks down cpu when not stressed

Your right this setting was enabled.
This seems to have made the system a lot nippier, not sure about installs just yet.
Sis there any benefit to clocking down your CPU? surely really cant see the point especially if it hinders windows tasks

Think by dropping to 6x FSB (think its that), the voltage to the CPU can be lowered so it gives less heat off.

yeah, I think the idea is to make it quieter by turning the CPU speed and the cooling reqired for it down when its not being stressed

Guys ... you're amazing ... never fail with these questions...

In the msi 975x powerup plat board its a very annonymous "C1E Function" set on auto.

Seems much improved.

I guess windows vista or linux might cope better with this but xp doesn't seem to.
