New CPU (AMD)

I am looking to upgrade my current CPU, which is a Phenom II 955be.

I don't want to change my motherboard out at the moment. It is a AM3.

So what would be good AMD upgrade? I'm guessing Piledriver, but I don't know which is best 'bang for the buck' ?

My budget is between £100-£150.

I'm not very good at AMD sockets/CPU's etc, but I think the "FX 8320" is widely recommended.

If it's AM3 you need a new board, AMD sacked off AM3 for AM3+.

This is a good choice, providing your motherboard supports it

I suspect it's AM3 and not AM3+ Damn.

Looks like you're needing a new board unless you buy Thuban.

It usually written on the motherboard and the box, only rev. 1.5 support AM3+ cpu but only up to the FX-8140

Rev 1.3 and it's AM3
Rev 1.4 and it's AM3
Rev 1.5 and it's AM3+ but only up to the FX-8140

You have the same board as me. When you do get a chance to have a look, the revision number is bottom left hand corner.

Looks like I'm holding off then until i can get a new motherboard and cpu. That would then open up the possibility of Intel.

That will be your best plan, then either an 8320 with motherboard, 4670k with motherboard or 4770k with motherboard depending on funds
