Hi all.

I currently have an old i5-6600K and really want to upgrade it to something that can run Elden Ring and allow me to upgrade to Windows 11 if I feel like it.

The rest of my system is fine currently (2070 Super & 32GM Ram)

Obviously though I need a motherboard as well as a CPU and a new fan (One that doesn’t cover Ram slots)

I don’t want to spend a fortune, £500 max (less would be better). Is this possible?

If it is can anyone recommend a board, CPU and fan? I’m not bothered if it’s Intel or AMD.

Thank you.

Thank you all. So definitely Intel over AMD?

I could get them seperately, so CPU this month, board and fan the following if it future proofs it more.

So 12700? K or KF?

If I wait and buy on seperate months, what's the better board and fan to go with it?

Thank you all.

Thank you.

I've just been looking at the CPU benchmarks on Passmark and noticed the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X which out performs both Intel chips and is a simialr price, is the Ryzen better or should I stick to the 12700f.

Thanks again.

Thank you, I didn't realise there were so many versions of the 12700, I looked here and only the K & KF are available, no F so I thought that was it.

I'll keep a look out for the F then.

Thank you.

I was going to post this on the CPU section but probably better to continue here.

I will get the 12700 but when it came to affixes I just assumed the higher the letter the more powerful but is that incorrect?

Does the F stand for no iGPU? so the 12700 F & FK don't have intergrated graphics but the 12700 & K do?

If that is correct how important is the iGPU?

Thank you.

Thank you.

I don't stream or content create. I use my PC to play games, browse the internet and use TH-U (Guitar amp sim), I don't even watch movies or TV on it much anymore due to smart TV's.

So as recommended I'll get an F version and save a few bob.

One last question, I've had my 6600K for over 6 years now and intend to keep the 12700F for the same amount so assume I can add a few quid and to help future proof a bit would you recommend the Z690 or the B660? and any other motherboard recommendations? (I don't need WiFi, to be honest I'm not sure why anyone would need it on a desktop PC)

Thank you.

Would either of these be a better board than the msi b660-a ddr4 as they are on sale and a similar price:

ASUS ROG Strix B660-F Gaming WiFi Intel® LGA 1700 ATX (DDR5, I have access to 16GB)

MSI PRO Z690-P DDR4 Motherboard ATX LGA 1700

Thank you.

Would remove the reference to a competitor.
Wasn't thinking, thank you.

Yes the B660-F is DDR5 and I have access to 16GB but I'm not sure it's worth it.

As for the Z690-P primary PCI-E slot being 5.0 (4 on the B660), would that be an issue for my 2070 super or sound blaster Z card?

I'm happy to get the msi b660m-a ddr4 I just wondered when I saw those prices whether it was worth looking at them instead (plus you can pay in installments which is nice)

Thank you.
