Hi All

I have decided to change my CPU cooler, I currently have a Coolermaster V8 in a Coolermaster CM690 case.

I have been looking at the Akasa AK-CC4008HP01 Venom Voodoo CPU Cooler , the video is awesome :)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-080-AK&tool=3

I checked the Thermalright Silver Arrow CPU Cooler but is OOS at the moment but I can wait.

What I want is something really quiey but also cools.

My CPU is a i7 920 clocked to 4Ghz, which runs at 43 degrees idle and 73 degrees under load using Prime95.

The only thing I need to be careful of is the Corsair Vengance I have is under the V8 ay the moment so I need to make sure the new cooler also fits above.

Any help would be appreciated :)

I have the same i7-920 also at 4Ghz and had similar temperatures at full load using a Noctua for air cooling.

Now using Antec Kuler 620 water cooling, core temps are around 60-65 at 100% usage. It hardly takes any vertical space above CPU, but a bit more against the rear case fan. It is also very quiet.

For the best in performance and low noise, get the Silver Arrow. Simply put the front fan at the back to accommodate your Vengeance kit.

Thanks for the replies.

I actually had triple channel memory in there until one of them failed a few months back so bought the vengeance, there are 6 slots on the board but I have to use the first 4 (next to the CPU) for dual channel.

So I have 2 options one is to take 2 sticks of memory out which would mean using slots 1 and 3 so the slot closest to the CPU (slot 2) would be unused or get lower profile memory?

I also plan to change the fans in my case to Akasa Venom Viper to improve the airflow.

AFAIK you're using the wrong memory kit. For Intel 1366 motherboards you should have 3 ram sticks, so it runs in triple channel.

Ideally you want to use triple channel mode but as you already have 4 sticks of RAM you could just stick with them in dual channel mode.

Have you tried running the 4 sticks in the slots furthest away from the processor leaving the 2 closest slots empty?

If it works you'd have more room for the larger CPU coolers.

The mobo manual says not to use those ports if you have dual channel.

I could buy another triple Channel kit instead, although I am leaning toward a mobo, CPU upgrade.

The manual gives certain recommended configurations.

I was just suggesting you try it the way I said.

If it doesn't work you've lost nothing.

If it does work then you don't need to spend any more money on RAM and you've made more room for the CPU cooler.

And if you want to use triple channel mode you don't neede to buy more RAM. Just use 3 sticks out of the 4 you already have.

Thanks, I will give it a go when I get home.

Forgive my ignorance on the RAM configuration I thought the memory was designed for tripple channel, in fact recently I saw 2x 4 gb labeled as tripple channel?

What mode the RAM operates in is determined by the memory controller and which RAM slots are used on the motherboard.

As long as you use the correct RAM slots on your motherboard you can get triple channel mode by using 3 individual sticks, a kit of 2 plus an individual stick, a kit of 3 or a kit of 4 and leave 1 out.

RAM is sold in dual/triple/quad channel kits for convenience and so that all the sticks are then "matched".

And it's impossible to use 2x4GB in triple channel mode.

Looks like you CAN get Triple channel with all 4 sticks in slots DDR_2 DDR_1 DDR_3 DDR_5

With the OP's existing RAM the point is to try and not use the first slot (DDR3_2) so there's room for a cooler like the Silver arrow.

If he replaces the RAM then that's a different story.

He could indeed.

I suggested he leave out a stick for triple channel mode knowing he couldn't use the first slot with his existing RAM.

You did indeed, you also suggested leaving DDR_1 and DDR_2 free. Which it turns out is not possible under any scenario, unfortunately :(
