New CPU Cooler - CPU overheating

I have an Asus Maximus VI Impact motherboard and I fitted the Zalman CNPS8900 cooler http://www.zalman.com/global/product/Product_Read.php?Idx=468 and when I boot it, immediately coretemp reads 80+ going upto 95+. Sometimes it wont boot because it of temp and asks to go in bios. It was a real tight fit, the screws didnt go down all the way but its tight when trying to screw in. It felt like the heatsink did sit on top of the cpu and applied a pea style themal paste.

I set the fan speed to Turbo in bios but not making real difference. Thinking a reseat of the cooler again?

Take the cooler off and check the paste spread to see if there was good contact. Sounds like it's not mounted correctly.

OK got it on now but if I tighten it too much I get a post 55 error and the nearest ram slot wouldn't work. Little more research reveals that if the cooler is too tight then this happens as it did the same with the stock cooler.

I would like to screw it a bit tighter but the post error was doing my head in so had to test about 15+ times. Now its working but not as good as it did when I tested outside the case, was idle at 31, no fluctuations.

Now in the case it the temp fluctuates from 32-47. Guessing because of having removing cooler numerous times to avoid post error and not reapplying paste?

I have to ask, so please understand I don't think you are dumb, .. but are you sure you have the mount installed properly?
Intel clips on cooler so they are angled to be close to mobo.
Backplate, screws & slide caps, double sided tape, but no loading block. Loading block is only for 775.
Only using a small amount of TIM (size of grain of cooked rice).

I have not mounted this specific cooler so don't know how tight the screws pull the Intel clips to mobo and backplate, but normally mounts pull down tight without stressing mobo and causing Bios errors.

Ofcourse its installed properly but not too tight as it causes post error as did the stock cooler, I think this happened after a cpu socket pin got bent. But I am able to use the pc properly

That makes more sense. Something is amiss with the mobo stopping cooler from being tightened completely down..

But in my defense, there are some very strange things done by users. Just a couple days ago someone was complaining about his Noctua cooler mount screws wrong size for 1155 motherboard backing plate. 1155 mobos don't have backing plates .. he had not removed the backing plate from another cooler he had on it. Another moved houses and system was overheating. CPU cooler fan was unplugged. "I can't get system to boot." HDD unplugged.
So that's why sometimes questions like snips86x and I did asked are posted .. :D
