new cpu cooler - need help!

Hi,

I recently bought a FX8350 cpu with Asus Sabertooth mobo. The CPU run atm under my old coolermaster hyper 212, however being a budget cooler I don't think its the best for OC ( it did the great job with my old phenom 955BE @4.0 stable ). I have some spare money , lets say £150 to spend on new cooling system. What would you guys suggest to go with, originally I was after H100i, than I tough well maybe better go with the best performing air cooler like silver arrow extreme or one of those funky phanteks. But when I've seen new Kraken x60 I though that's it! however its on pre order atm and im not sure when Overclockers will get it in stock. Also just right now I spotted them watercooling kits ie. V6 Watercooling Kit 120 which is on offer atm, but tbh I have no idea how it perform when compared to lets say H100i. Any help much apriciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for reply,

for ease of use, yes probably h100i being an AIO is a better choice
peace of mind, same as above i guess
pocket thickness, i dont mind it, possibly I could stretch it to something like this
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-172-EK&tool=3
Also worth to mention I run pc with Asus directcuII 7950 and im planing to add another one in near future ( so I could add them to the loop ? - dont know if possible with those kits ).

would you think h100i handle 8350 @5ghz ?

corsair h110 / kraken x60 seems to be the best performance aio / air coolers atm. they have both 140mm wide radiators.

unless you go with water (which you can probably do for £150), you won't get better performance. as for getting 5ghz, it depends on the chip / motherboard themselves.

intersting to see that in that review, the NH-D14 still competes. The SilverArrow SB-E Extreme will probably give it a run for its money, but at the expense of noise.

Personally, I'd just go with a NH-D14, Dark Rock Pro 2, SilverArrow, Phantek, and 5.0GHz be damn. You get a simple air cooler, with a good overclock, lots of flexibility and quietness. Will be better than a Hyper 212 Evo for sure. Anything above that, I'd consider full water cooling, with a thick 240 or 360 (then you need the case for it). CPU has to be up for it though, and it's a lottery.

uh oh Kraken x60 is in stock! if they don't sell out till 5pm tomorrow Ill be getting one.

Ps. should I get 2 extra fans for push/pull?

damn now you've killed me with that review! noctua is almost as good as the kraken x60 and better than h100i :o hummm what to do what to do!

I think you need more research, especially on a FX8350, which behaves slightly different from a 3770K.

The Kraken maybe the best, but I wouldn't discount the big air coolers for a 4.8GHz overclock, and for much cheaper.

If it was me i would go for an air cooler, over an AIO cooler.
They are as good and normaly quieter as well.
But a custom water cooling loop will out perform air, is it worth paying maybe £100+ extra for maybe a .4ghz extra overclock? thats even if your mobo/cpu are capable of it.
Only you can answer that.
So i would get the Noctua, Phanteks, SB-E etc...
Just make sure an high end air cooler fits with your case/ram

Im still not sure what to buy... The kraken x60 cost £119 atm , where the top air coolers are around £70 + 12-15 pounds for third fan, that makes them +- £35 cheaper than x60 , also worth to mention the H110 is around £95 and it perform as well as the x60 according to the review from Oliver.

Also, if air cooler which one is the best? is the Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E SE same as Extreme ?

Currently I use a Phanteks 14 with two fans and the system is fully prime stable just south of 4.7GHz 24/7 with good temps and volts. Three fans may reduce by 1-2C but IMO is not worth it.

I am looking at a cheap custom water loop based on MM parts to do a comparison.

5GHz is possible currently for benching with slightly high temps 68C but no throttling. Prime 95 and IBT is not currently possible at 5GHz, hence the loop.

My IBT runs for 100GFlops were carried out at about 4.8GHz again without throttling or overheating.

wow that's very informative nkata, Thanks!. so which one do you guys recommend to go out of these 3:

Silver Arrow Extreme SB-E
Noctua NH-D14
Phanteks PH-TC14PE

also is the Silver Arrow SB-E SE same as Extreme SB-E except its in black ?

Thanks

ok, small profile, so you have no cooler restrictions.

Which air cooler, difficult to say.

I'm bothered by noise, so the SB-E extreme for me is just too much. The SB-E SE being the same as the SB-E Extreme, depends on the fans. If it's TY-143, then they are the same. But 2,500 rpm, too much for me. It would be like the Corsair H100 all over again. Dunno how confident you'd be being able to tame the TY-143 speed (tunable fan profile in the BIOS, two PWM 4 pin connectors?), and if it will give similar performance when throttled to standard SB-E.

I'd go with the Silver Arrow or the NH-D14 personally. I like Thermalright, they make some very good products, and the TY-140 fan has a great balance between performance and noise.

Any of these will destroy the Hyper 212 Evo. They are just not in the same league.

EDIT : Looking at the Sabertooth 990FX, looks like it can tune the two CPU fans, so that's good.

So i shall go with this :) or is the extreme version much better ( I don't mind a bit noisier fans :P )

So I've made decision and ordered Silver Arrow SB-E dual fan + 1 extra 140mm fan and 2 extra 120mm fans to install inside the case. Hopefully will get my order on Friday. I still fancy a nice full water cooling system ( as it looks nice ^^ especially with those metallic like coolants ). But to go with it I would probably have to spend something like +£250 to get proper one. So air for now and water in a 2-3 months time ;D

Thanks everyone for help! great forum :)
