My Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro has started making a squeaking/whirring noise which is getting annoying! Going to replace it and would like suggestions as I have no real idea of comparison between manufacturers. Budget around £30-40. I have an Antec p180 case and Asus P5k mb.

What chip will you specifically be cooling and will you be overclocking?

The Titan Fenrir does the job well at £33 - link - if you're planning on clocking the CPU and fits most flavours.

Q6600 to 3ghz ish currently and is too high temp at moment under full load ~90C on hottest core (78C on coolest)

The titan or any of the above listed by bifday2k should see your temps drop significantly (hopefully).

You may be able to push your clock significantly higher too (3.4 - 3.6) with the addition of a better cooler - as the q6600 is a legendary chip and very resilient.

I'm following this thread with interest as I've just fitted a Q6600 and, after trying about 15 times, managed to break the stupid little plastic tabs off my Arctic Cooling 7 and almost throwing it out of the window.

So a good cooler for a Q6600 that's easy to fit by someone with anger management issues would be good.

The pushpin method on some 3rd party coolers verges on the insane. My MB physically bowed after an hour of forcing the pins into place -before i replaced it with a bolt-thu-kit (which you may want to consider as its a cheap option)

I know it's a pain having to take the MB out to fit a back plate but it still beats the frustration of trying to fit a monolith with feeble plastic pins – and once the back plate is fitted the fitting of the HS is a breeze. So no danger of wanting to propel your hardware against the nearest supporting wall due to push-pin induced anger.

+1 for a bolt thru kit, ive only ever used one heatsink with push pins (arctic freezer). Trying to get it fited was a knuckle scraping nightmare, backplate and bolts is definitey the way forward, gives you a lot more piece of mind for the small price of removing the motherboard.

Thanks, that looks far better.

Thanks, I think I got it off my chest!

So is the one suggested above by Geek best, or should I (and the OP) pull my finger out and get the mobo out?

As far as i know, the one Geek suggested also has a multi socket back plate - so you would have to take the MB out for this cooler too.

I personally would opt for a backplate fitting and get the one that is efficient and yet relatively quiet especially when the CPU is idle.

Or, as mentioned earlier, you could just buy a bolt-thru-kit for your prsent cooler - cost ~£8.

Thanks again, can you get bolt-thru-kits for the Arctic Cooling 7?

I see what you mean about the Alpenfohn one, but it still looks good. Time to strip the MB out again either way :(;)

Yes, you buy the bolt-thru-kit that's compatible with the LGA775 socket rather than the cooler itself - but it's the same result - it will work with the AC7.

You will need the Thermalright LGA775 Bolt-Thru-Kit (Rev 2.0 preferably as it enables you to detach and re-attach the HS without having to take the MB out *once* it's been initially fitted.)

Just google Thermalright LGA775 Bolt-Thru-Kit as OcUk don't appear to sell them.

Thanks guys, that looks perfect for me (and hopefully for greedy123 too, hopefully the shameless thread hijack helped you too;)), I just need to find somewhere I can go to buy one tomorrow, feel free to e-mail me with details if anyone knows....

Cheers
