hi my uncle is looking to speed up his computer and i thought maybe replace the processor and up the RAM.
At the moment he has a intel pentium 4 processor, 2.8GHZ (no idea what cache), it's just an HP computer, ready built, about £400 about 2 years ago. He has 512mb RAM
So on a small budget what can he do to speed up his computer, i am going through deleting program's and clearing rubbish off the HDD, and reducing the amount of processes, especially on initial start as when loaded etc it runs at about 27% processor usage

Another 512 ram (or maybe even a 2gb kit, dead cheap now!) and the fastest P4 the socket and chipset will allow.

Might want to consider a new HDD too, depending on the specs of that one

More that likley although there were plenty on 478, especially 2 years ago.

Also the chipset may not be able to run the higher FSB on the later chips

If its labelled HP Compaq then it may be a EVO d530. Rock solid machines.

Its prob 533 FSB. If its a mini-tower it will have SATA so you may be able to upgrade the IDE.

Up the memory(check comaptibilty before buying it) and rebuild it. You can pickup a second hand 6600 Grapics Card to stick in as well.
