so after trying to run my plex server library from an old core 2 due e6550 it didnt go well.

could transcode any file i gave it.

looking at either a an amd a4-5300 or an intel Celeron G1610

which would be better for the job?

Either should be fine im using my HP NL54 microserver for my plex server

I use this too. 99% of files are just streamed across the local network so not an issue, but I have also been able to transcode a 1080p file with no issues.

I ran a Celeron as my Plex server for 18 months, CPU hits 100% on transcode which did occasionally cause issues, but generally fine.

Upgraded to an i3 and it is now perfect - maybe even a little overkill. From what I gather it does like to use multiple cores, so it's a balancing act.

Worth testing all CPU options with advanced settings first (try 'Make my CPU hurt')?
