Hi all,
I'm a little torn but I think I have made up my mind but would like some fine tuning.
I currently use a 2500k @ 4.3Ghz,Corsair H100i AIO cooler, 8GB RAM, EVGA GTX1080 AIO at 2560x1440 60hz.

My Current RAM is only 1600Mhz, no idea what I was thinking but it was 6 years ago. I have noticed that whilst gaming and internet surfing I'm around 70% usage my CPU is always spiking up to 100% usage and I'm starting to notice more and more stutters whilst gaming and loading.

My main game is World of Warcraft but I dabble with new games that come out. I spend a lot of time whilst playing MMOs alt-tabbing, chrome open, streaming catch up TV/Sports and streaming my own games is something I'd like to get into.

My top budget would be in the £800 range, but there's no hard limit.

So with that, I was going to go with an 8700k as I have seen it for under £250 online (legit?).

I'm mainly curious as to what Mobo and RAM I should go with to be able to overclock it a little as I have the h100i cooler. I'd like to try an M.2 SSD so that I can get rid of my current 2.5" and have less cables. I also have a soundblaster soundcard that I've had for a few years now and I was wondering if it is still worth keeping or are motherboard onboard sounds getting better?

My old parts will be donated to my girlfriend as she's still rocking a dual core.

So far I have:

8700k - £250 - online
SSD - £239.99 - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sams...-3.0-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-hd-22h-sa.html
3000MHz 16GB RAM - £189 - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cors...hannel-kit-black-cmk16gx4m2b30-my-445-cs.html
Motherboard - £113 - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...151-ddr4-micro-atx-motherboard-mb-561-gi.html

Total ~£800

Many thanks.

In pretty much in the same boat.

This is what I think I've finally got it down to:

8700k (that 250 one on the rain-forest is a scam I am sure)
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team...al-channel-kit-black-grey-tlgd-my-09s-tg.html
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asro...cket-1151-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-15k-ak.html (or gigabyte "2.0 ultra gaming")

That SSD can be had for atleast £40 less, ocuk had it at 200 last week I believe.

** Do Not mention competitors ** £300 for the 8700k is still a good shout here on OC, but would the 8600k be worth the difference at £210? You then also have the Ryzen. :D

The SSD, are they worthwhile in the M.2 Form? I have 2 250GB SSDs at the moment but they're SATA 2.5" and 4-5 years old. The new M.2 looks nice, less in the case and some nice write/read speeds.

The gains from hdd to ssd are huge and the gains from your sata to those m.2 drives will be far far less noticable. That said I have just bought a 250gb m.2 Samsung 960 evo (needs only to store os and 1/2 games), as having used one on a family members rig, I feel the gains will be worth it for mmorpgs. I already have a 3tb hdd for storage and that is way more than I'll ever need. (was on offer for about the price of a 1tb!) In your case I would probably get the 250gb and a 1tb storage drive(or 2x 1tb as a mirror raid to be extra safe if your data is important) and deal with the couple of extra cables, you could get the 250 m.2 and 2x 1tb drives for less than the 500 m.2 anyway.

From what I gather, in gaming the 8700k may see gains in the minimum frames, as the extra threads will take some of the os/background things (browser etc). That said I too am still considering saving the money and getting a 8600k, the run cooler I believe, so are easier to oc without "delidding". For max frames in the games you play, I doubt there would be any difference, going by what I read/have been told.

Thank you for the insight. I do already have a 1tb western digital something or other but that's only used for storing downloads which I think I will move over to my girlfriends PC instead and use that for storing the downloads. My current SSD is 250 Samsung evo 840, which is around 500 read/write, the 960 evo appears to be more than 4x faster at read speed, would I actually see a benefit of such speeds?

No, it wont feel anything like 4x faster, in fact a lot of people would probably not notice the difference. Maybe 0-30% faster load times(partly guessing) depending on the game/program. For me it made some sense as I intend to re-use my current sata 3 ssd and as I am fine with 250gb, the m.2. was not that big of a premium over a decent 250gb sata.

Since mention of streaming , ryzen 2700 on mATX B350 chipset and 1TB of SSD. Seems new WoW expansion will take advantage of thread counts from recommend spec if i7 4***/FX 8***

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £698.42 (includes shipping: £10.50)

And then non K Intel , since standard 8700 hits 4.3ghz on all cores

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £699.46 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Not bad saving for lists that will do as the 8700k above if your after saving pennies and don't want to change AIO to be able to cool 5ghz and over

I am a huge fan of PCIe SSD's, I have three of them. Having said that, I would consider them a luxury item, in the sense that there are better places to spend money if needed. Personally I find them very noticeably faster, but I certainly would not buy one to replace an existing good SATA SSD. If you really want the increase in speed then get a 256GB for your primary drive and use the old SSD for storing games and data. If you really only want just one drive then I would suggest dropping the idea of the PCIe altogether and saving money with a Crucial 500GB MX500 SATA or saving a bit less and getting a Crucial 1TB MX500 ( Shop around for that and you can get them at a bargain price ).

Thanks for the words guys. If it isn't worth going over to an m.2 then I'm happy to stick with my current storage situation.

Orbital, without the additional storage do you think it would be worth the extra £30 as a whole to go for a ryzen 2700x instead of non x?

Without the SSD I have put together the below.

Bit higher on the RAM speed. I read that a higher speed helps with the Ryzen CPU. Would the motherboard be suitable? I don't mind throwing an extra £50 at that if there's something more worthwhile. I do prefer the aesthetics of the Asus ROG here: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...ocket-am4-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-6c1-as.html or the Asus Prime: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...ocket-am4-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-6c0-as.html

One potential issue; upon a bit further inspection I believe my h100i only supports AM3 sockets and not the AM4 according to the box. Would I need to look at contacting Corsair to see about a bracket of some sort?

If your not interested in overclocking then yes, as the X version will pretty do a bang up job itself ! AMD has pretty much made these chips without the need to overclock .

Go with the above IF you can HOUSE an ATX board ^^^^^ as you mentioned mATX in your list why I went with the B350 Gaming 5. It can house the 2700x but board may need flashing of the BIOS which Gigabyte UK can do .

For ram to save a little cash

Many thanks,
I have a Corsair 400Q and an ATX board in there already so I should be good with that size. Upon a closer inspection of my CPU cooler I have the H110i 280MM Extreme which does support the AM4 socket.

I've now just got to decide whether I want AMD or Intel. D:

Splashing all out , overclock the 8 pack ram to 3800/4000hz
Free copy of Farcry 5 still I believe and flog that free cooler

Nice spread of pricing

Many thanks for your help Orbital, may I ask. What's the difference between the Aorus Gaming 5 and the Aorus ULTRA Gaming? Is it as simple as an extra £30 just for the WiFi and LEDs? Neither of which I would need :D

Then stick with the Ultra ! :D vrm count is the same 8+3 (cpu+SOC) and heat sink is a massive upgrade from z370 series but the Aorus 5 heatsink is a better design , and then Aorus 7 is designed to cool the sun

Same as they were £119 and £150 pre order before launch . Demand outstripping supply so slowly going up here . Low stock on other sites by a handful

Not yet no, still awaiting dispatch as I'm waiting on the Mobo.

I'll get a couple when I finish the build!

I went for the 8pack 3600 for £188 :)

haha damn!

hopefully another BIOS should be released before you get the board . as a rule. leave everything to default when installing windows or drivers etc (ram speed defualt 2133/2400 and CPU at stock)

What is the best way to do a fresh install of windows 10 on new hardware? I'm guessing I have to download a file from microsoft?
