Hey guys, I will be upgrading for pretty much PC gaming only

I game on a 20 inch Samsung monitor at 1680 by 1050

I currently have a AMD Phenom II4 965 Processor 3.40 GHz AM3 board

8GB RAM and a 2gb 6950 graphics card

I will also probably need a new motherboard aswell, I was told to stick with asus, gigabyte or msi, good advice ?

Could I get new mobo, cpu and graphics card for around £400 ? im hoping my PC Gamer case and RAM will hold all the new parts, the 6950 just about fitted, thanks for any help, something that will keep me going well for around 2 years maybe ? im not sure as im not high up on PC parts, thanks again

For a decent graphics card, would I be looking at a 970 or R9 290 x or similar ? good upgrade from a 6950 ? I guess I may also need a great cooler and PSU are a must ? maybe sell some of the older parts for some extra ££ ? thanks again

I'd go with the Gigabyte Z97P-D3 (providing you you wont be going sli/xfire) and a Haswell 4690k if you don't want to wait for the new cpu's coming, you can use the same ram you already got if it's 1600mhz ddr3 that leaves around £150 left for a card I'd get a 280x.

This is of course if you want to buy brand new the best value would be a second hand 2500k or 2600/2700k Cpu and board.
Really should upgrade that monitor to a 1080p though.

what new CPUs are coming ? from both Intel and AMD ? will they offer better performance perhaps, at the same price maybe ?

From intel we have broadwell coming out in a couple of months, which will definitely be an improvement over your Phenom.....but a month after that we have skylake, which will be an even bigger improvement. With broadwell you can use z97 boards and ddr3 ram, which you can certainly get for less than your budget. skylake will need a new z170 board and ddr4 ram, which based on current prices and estimates will probably be over your budget. Someone else will have to fill in the blanks for AMD's up-coming releases....

Now im thinking on waiting till August maybe, and see whats available then, spend big £££

Any reccomendations for a good/decent monitor, maybe something around a 24 inch ?

I wouldn't hold your breath for Broadwell, it's not shaping up to be anything big but maybe that'll change (probably not :p)

Skylake is the only thing worth waiting for in the upcoming months for CPUs
