Guys, I just switched my CPU from an AMD 64 3700 to an opty 165 and windows wont boot. I set the bios back to failsafe defaults and let it boot, but it would restart before the windows logo appears. I tried starting in safe mode but when it got up to Mup.sys it would restart. The wierd thing is, intermittently I have been able to get into windows, both in normal and in start mode, when it was in I had no problems with it at all. I thought the problems might be because of the AMD dual core XP fix so one time when it booted normally I installed that, but it did not seem to make any difference.

I tried removing my graphics card and using the on board gpu, but that made no difference. Ive also messed with the bios settings but to no avail. I never had a problem with it until I installed this new cpu.

I am using a DFI infinity RS482 motherboard.

Do you think re-installing XP would sort it or is there a hardware issue here?

Edit: I seem to be experiencing exactly the same problem as this guy:

Give an XP re-install a go.

Carp. Just tried reinstalling and after copying all the files onto my drive and rebooting, I got a BSOD citing the error:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Is that bad? I think that's bad. :(

Also, temps are fine - all below 50. One other thing, does it matter if my hard drive is connected to the middle of the ide cable and the dvd drive to the end? I read somewhere that this could cause irql errors, but i dont remember having an issue before?

That is sharing 1 IDE cable? You should have them on their own cable, i.e. Primary & Secondary, not Master & Slave :)
