Hi,
Just upgraded my q8200 to a q9550.

But it seems to be running faster than it should, i know pretty much nothing about OC-ing..but am willing to learn?.

surely this isnt right, running at 3.2ghz?

did you have your q8200 overclocked? maybe the same settings are being used for this cpu, reset bios to stock settings and see if it makes a difference

if its stable and works great then just use it as it is tbh .. and then clock some more
 
Thats pretty funny, is it running stabily? Check using OCCT.

For some reason your bus speed is running at 400Mhz (333 is stock) and the voltage is elevated (likely using auto).

What motherboard and cooling are you running?

mobo is a p5q-pro, with an asus silent knight cooler?.
having a quick play with OCCT, it seems stable.. (i only ran the cpu test for 30mins though)
but oddly, its going into a -15% overclock on idle. 2.4ghz??
i had a quick bios browse, thinking there may be a speedstep feature or similar.. but nothing.
 
Good to hear it is stable. With that known then your answer is: Leave it as it is, then keep on clocking :)

As for why its overclocked - I guess someone (fairies maybe) set the FSB to 400MHz, everything else is automatic (the top multiplier of the Q9550 is 8.5 - so I guess it should top out at 3.4GHz with those settings) . I suggest checking that your RAM is running at stock speeds (if you are lucky it will be running at 400MHz synchronous, which is very nice).

About the frequency reduction, that's definitely speedstep. It reduces the multiplier down to a minimum of 6 when the CPU is not heavily loaded, 400 x 6 = 2.4GHz.

You have a wonderful E0 stepping Q9550 there, as well as a swift P45 board. With a bit of time you can get 3.8-4.0 GHz out of that lot should you wish. But I gotta say, 3.4GHz with literally no effort is very impressive.
 
That happened when i changed mine, didnt reset the BIOS before i changed the CPU, it keeps running at the previous settings.

I got mine to 3.5Ghz easily, just changing the FSB and memory multiplier.

Hi again.
I left occt running all night and everythings stable.
Temps didnt go over 50*c and each cores within 1* of each other which is nice.

I remember i tried oc'ing my 8200, but though i reverted back to standard...obviously not lol.

should 3.8-4.0ghz be easily attainable with my setup? i have a corsair h50 on order as my cpu fans sounding a bit tired currently.
 
Great to hear, sounds like you are on to a winner.

The E0 is good for overclocking, so you may be able to go as high as 4GHz, I suppose it depends on your batch. However, it will take a bit of work to get it that high, certainly not as easy as you have had it so far :). Corsair H50, you sure aren't gonna have problems with temps.
 
My Q9550 is OC'd to 3.7Ghz now with the H50, sits at 52c which is nice.

Ive had to raise the north bridge and FSB voltages but its stable enough.

Slight hijack here, whats the max safe FSB and north bridge voltage to be running at? Im +0.2v on both at the minute
