New CPU - posts but won't boot - worth persevering?

As per title, I've just installed a new CPU and gone from an AMD Athlon P320 to a Phenom P860. The new CPU is recognised by the BIOS but the computer hangs on the Windows loading screen. Is it worth doing a fresh install of Windows or is this a bad sign? Can't remember with PC CPU upgrades whether they have just booted or not...

It's an MSI CR630. I upgrade to the P860 on the basis that they did a model with a P820 as standard and I thought it was fairly likely the mobo/BIOS would be the same in both as MSI aren't exactly renowned for spending money they don't have to! The vital stats of the CPU are similar to the one it replaced though I know laptop upgrades are always a gamble.

I'm running Windows 7 if that makes any difference but I can try a Linux boot tonight. Consensus on Google is a fresh install may be required as Windows 7 can be picky.

The error thrown up was along these lines "No boot Windows 7. Error: ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt"

Sorry, I should have clarified. It hung a couple of times after booting then threw up the error on a later boot. I'll try a repair install and go from there.

Won't boot into Linux Live unfortunately. I'll try updating the BIOS and reinstalling but looking like it's not going to work.
