My PC very kindly died on Xmas day, so its a prime oportunity to replace the mobo / cpu / ram.

I had a Socket 939 X2 3800+ clocked to 2.5Ghz, but this time I do not want to overclock. I don't have the time or patience to fiddle with settings or get it running prime stable.

So my question to you all, is which CPU offers the best performance without the need to overclock. I've been considering the AM2 X6400+ black edition as it is clocked at 3.2ghz stock. I've also looked at the Intel E6850, which is clocked at 3Ghz.

Thanks for the reply.

The PC powers on, I just can't load or reinstall windows.
The HDD was very clunky and making funny noises, so I thought it may be that and replaced it with no success.

Which leads me to suspect, it could be the mobo, but if i buy one and it don't work, I have got to a stage where i may as well have upgraded.

I have also found it difficult to locate a socket 939 mobo.

Anyhoo, I'm not really wanting to overclock this time (see original post), so wondered what the best cpu is out of the box?

Any core2duo is good out the box :)

Some even clock by 50% out the box with no tweaking.

Dont be put off by the lower clocks compared to AMD - there much better :)

I checked mm and there are none currently for sale.
In the end I went for an E6850 and a Gigabyte DS3.
