hi

i want to get a upgrade from my E6300 to a 1333mhz chip and looking at Q8200 or E8400.

which would be the best to go for.

my mobo etc is:

gigabyte P35C DS3R
4 gig of ocz gold 800 ram ddr2
sammy hdd 500 gig
4850 512 meg graphics card.

tried to o/c the e6300 but wouldn't work.

depends what you're going to use it for. personally i would get an e8400 and oc it to 4+ghz. the q8200 doesn't oc that well and only has 4mb cache. if youre going to use it for gaming, i would get teh e8400 as current games dont really support quad core and they will benefit from the higher clock speed and cache of the e8400. If you're encoding videos and stuff, the quad would probably be better suited.
when you say the overclocking 'didn't work', what do you mean exactly? did you drop the ram divider, increase the vcore etc? your board should oc that cpu pretty well...

thanks. i use my machine for gaming, copying stuff and occasional video compiling when doing other stuff which always slows it down. thats not very often so may go for the E8400.

i tried doing all the o/c stuff, but when i saved the settings, slight changes, it would reboot then crash and reset to defaults all the time. if it didn;t, the cpuz didn;t say any change to speeds at all. may try again but want a 1333mhz processor and new ram.

Go for the E8400. It will be much better for gaming then the Q8200 will and much cheaper than a similarly clocked quad. That money can either be saved altogether or can go towards a better graphics card, which will impact gaming much more.

+1 not much else to add to that

cheers guys for all your input and against better judgment i opted for the quad core. it was £15 cheaper than the E8400 inc delivery and i have some 'orders' from friends to do some video editing. i read that it can be overclocked well if needed, i know probably not as much as the E8400 but i'll see how i get on.

mattf: my card is playing everythign very well, but mirrors edge went bonkers on me the other day, slow and blocky etc. need some new drivers probably. will the 4870 be that much of an advantage over my 4850?
