I am going to build my son a PC for his big present this Christmas and have decided to use most of my current rigs parts, other than the mobo as it needs to be a mini-itx. I was wondering is there was going to be anything released before Christmas (at least a couple of weeks) CPU wise (Intel or AMD). Or should I just stump up for something in current Intel line up.

I will be looking to spend around 700 for a processor, motherboard and DDR4.

Zen is a possibility, also. Kabylake and to a lesser extent Skylake will probably be better overall, however.

If he just wants a kickass gaming PC just go for a 4core i5/i7, media editing may justify more cores, however, but I'd check back closer to the time

I just built an i7-6700K with 16GB RAM and the CPU/mobo/RAM came in at well under £600. Used a Gigabyte Gaming 5 mATX board as size was a driver for me.

Combined with an EVGA 1070 (SC version) and it absolutely flies, very happy with it.

Haven't overclocked it yet as I wanted to be sure everything was nice and stable and I have a good contact with my heatsink but at stock under load my CPU sits below 40C so plenty or room to turn the wick up at bit when I get some time.

For gaming put the money into the GPU.

6700K is totally fine for gaming infact often better the X99 solutions for this application.

TBH I am going to get a 480 to replace my nano that will go into my son's SFF PC. The 480 will tide me over til Vega, and then the 480 will will then go to my son. And I will sell the nano methinks . I think will go hexa core just because I have bought nothing but quad-core. Just got to wait till another payday or two before I can "pull the trigger" as they say.
