New Dell Vostro 3550

Question about Vostro 3550

Hey, I am wondering about buying the Vostro 3550 but am worried about noise... What is your assessment about how the laptop is in that regard? Is it quiet while surfing? How is it while gaming? Any pros and cons would be greatly appreciated, since there is only one review out there and it has no mention of noise, or the lack thereof...

Hope for fast response, since I'm planning on ordering on monday the second of may...

Hey, sorry I did not write anything about the laptop, but that is because I did not get it yet. I ordered it on the 22nd and it has yet to arrive. I am thinking I will get it tomorrow. Will let you know what my first impressions are.

I finally got the laptop. I do not have enough time to do a full-fledged review, that will follow in the days to come, but I can tell you my first impressions.

Things I like:
Illuminated Keyboard
The Keyboard feels good to type on
Trackpad very responsive and sleek and is of decent size
Laptop is snappy
Screen is nice and matte and the colours look good

Things I don't like:
First thing I noticed when I got it out the box is that the hinges don't do a great job of holding the laptop closed, nothing too serious, but coming from a thinkpad I am disappointed.
I don't like the feel of the palmrest, it's way too grainy for my taste.
The keyboard has some flex, although to be perfectly honest I am not that boethered by it. It doesn't impede my typing but it is very obvious even when using a light touch.

So far I am pretty happy with it, I think it's pretty decent. I will follow up with more details in the days to come. One more thing, it doesn't get hot at all, and is very quiet.

Great:) Hehe, I'm ordering one right after I type these words:) The biggest concern for me was really the noise, as I hate having to listen to noise while typing/surfing and so on:) Great first impression review, I greatly appreciate it:) Have a good weekend, by the way what setup did you choose? (i5, i7 etc:)

I went for the entry-level i3 with integrated graphics as I don't need more at the moment, and I will probably go the Ivy Bridge way in a year anyway. :)

forgot to mention, Dell was kind enough to provide me with a Belkin pc to pc data transfer cable free of charge and I was able to get over 66 Gb of stuff from my old laptop to my new Dell within an hour... pretty sweet

As I mentioned previously, there are a couple of things that bug me about the laptop, although I have been warming up to it.

First is the fact that the screen hinges don't do an exceptional job of keeping the laptop closed as you can see in the picture. The lid sits close when the laptop is sitting in a horizontal position, but as soon as I take it in a vertical position, like when I am carrying it under my arm it tends to open slightly, which can be a problem.

My second gripe with it so far is that the DVD RW unite stick out a bit, it's not flush. The optical unit works without a hitch, it's just that it's not tucked all the way in. However, apart from the fact that it looks a bit off, I have no problem with it.

I will get back with more impressions after I've had a bit more time with it.

I would be curios when you get yours if you could post some pics of it. I especially want to see if yours has the same build quality as mine or if mine was a lemon haha

Hello,

could you please be so kind and post something about the build quality of the Vostro 3550?
Is it poor or would you say its of high-quality? You think it can "survive" several years?

What about the keyboard. Is it possible to write long texts on it or is it of poor quality?

Thank you

the keyboard is really nice to type on... in terms of build quality I cannot say I was impressed at first but it's not terrible either. I think it should be able to survive for several years if you take care of it, as it's not that tough, however, I don't expect it to fall apart on you either.
