Looks like they're now ready for pre-order.

Was almost certain about the P35K but I don't think I have a requirement for those sort of specifications at the moment as I still have a decent desktop for gaming. The build quality issues that have been reported have put me off also and now this machine has come along.

The bottom specifications is pretty pants to be fair but the middle one looks to be decent enough, if a little pricey. I'm under the impression that windows 8.1 is setup to deal with higher resolutions like this, and I guess with a IGZO screen and Haswell, the battery life should be good.

What do you think?

They do look like a contender but to me the haswell laptop market as much as it's tempting is a bit of a new landscape. I'm going to wait for the dust to settle after xmas when prices should also drop a bit. Need more input from reviews and end users.

I considered an MBA recently, even placed the order but cancelled as I wasn't convinced I would settle in with OSX. The MBA resolution also isn't great - although it does look fantastic hands on - I would have preferred 1080p.

It's hard to find a laptop now that ticks all the boxes. To me key features are:

Light-ish (2KG max)
SSD
SSD + HDD would be a bonus
Good trackpad (the MBA's is the benchmark for me)
Good integrated graphics (MBA seems the only one available with HD 5000?)
6 hour + battery life
Cool and silent under load
Ethernet port

The new XPS ticks all those boxes ^ not cheap but cheaper than the equivalent MBP by around £700.

I have one in production at the moment so will let you know what its like when it arrives.

Theres a good ongoing owners review of the M3800 here:-

M3800 is the workstation version of the XPS and shares the chassis and components bar the discrete GPU I beleive. Seems to be a very good laptop so far!

Initial reports are looking good, will be keeping an eye out for the next week or two. Am quite interested in the middle spec, mainly because I can't afford the top spec!

What about the ASUS N550JV?

i7 Haswell, 750GT etc, all for less than the Dell.

fair bit chunkier and heavier than the dell though, and with a smaller battery, personally im more interested in the xps 13 refresh when it comes though

Big(gest) problem with the N550JV is no mSATA slot or scope for a 2nd drive....it is either HDD as fitted, or replace with SSD :(

aye i agree, was just pointing out how it probably justifies the ~£200 over the asus linked to by markdavis from a pricing perspective, whether that makes it worth it is opinion.

Over £500 price difference if you spec the XPS15 with a GT 750M, though it also comes with a QXD screen, 1TB HDD and 16gb RAM. Lovely machine but its a heck of a lot of money in that spec.

The £1250 model only comes with i5 and Intel HD 4400 which seems crazy for a laptop that price.

I've also been scouring the web for info on the new Dell XPS 15... looks like it ticks a lot of boxes!

The QHD screen is a big selling point, and the fact its capacitive touch also adds extra longevity. In addition, the specs are good, battery life also seems decent, and it build-wise it looks pretty top-notch to boot. Sure, the 750m is no gaming powerhouse, but for my needs its fine.

It may be pricey, but seems like it ticks all the boxes. Aside from it doesn't seem to have an ethernet port judging from the business versions spec? Also, don't forget that the Dell has a wireless 802.11ac card.

The ASUS N550JV looks nice, great speakers and build quality, but lower resolution screen and slower wireless.

I hear the Wifi performance on these is broken... even with the new 802.11ac cards. If true that's a serious bugger imo. :(

The P34G is a weird device, it's small and portable but you can't really game on it on battery (limited time + reduced performance) so you are stuck with using it with power on, for which you might as well have a 15" or 17" incher.

For casual browsing it doesn't make much sense either, 2.5hrs battery runtime is pretty poor.

So it's a weird spec in my books.

Please quote who you are replying to, otherwise it just looks like a strangely disjointed post about a different laptop.
