I'm looking at getting a new desk like this:

I'm going to slide my laptop into the open section, after attaching some slightly angled ledges so the laptop will sit raised.

I want to put some exhaust fans in the back of that section of the desk to remove heat and increase airflow.

What the easiest way to power say 4 fans without a mobo to plumb them into?

Thanks.

I guess you edited your post after I replied.

There are several ways to power them, one way would be to get a 7-12v wall adapter and wire up the fans to that.

I'd like a cleaner look/less obvious cables. I'm thinking of having a thunderbolt hub permanently attached to the desk, so maybe USB power?

google "fan array" or "fan tray" you can get them for like sever racking and such, plug all your fans into the slots, mount the wrack and its all connected with 1 cable coming out where you power the unit with a 12v or something

USB power might be good also but you would have to buy USB fans or convert your fans to USB to connect them in surely?
