I don't have a problem with freeware software doing this as it provides a revenue stream for them.
But Microsoft doing it for a component update is just overboard. Although other companies are doing it now too. AMD have a LOTRO icon and show up game ads during the Radeon drivers install which is plain ridiculous.

Wow, one check box is overboard? If you had no choice in the matter then I would agree.

Pretty much anything I install wants to install some kind of toolbar.
You always get PCs owned by less PC literate people having google, bing, yahoo, ask jeeves and some more obscure toolbars or homepages installed.
I deal with these idiots everyday who don't read what there installing.
